I am running a Mott Flail mower on the 3 pt hitch for my 154. Working fine. I want to lube before i head out for late summer cutting.
1. Can't find grease fittings for the roller or the cutting shaft. Only 2 grease fittings i have found are at the U joint just before the gearbox and 1 on top of unit near the belt housings. There must be more?
2. Gearbox is bolted--no oil fill port. I have taken the plate off. need to replace and fill oil. How much gear oil should I put in there and do i need to use silicon or something on the plate when i put it back?
Thanks for any help,
A mannual for this would be great too!

Re: Mott Flail Mower CLB 60
Take a flat bladed screwdriver and dig into the outer ends of the roller. There is suppose to be a zerk in there. The recess in each end of the roller tends to fill up with debris. I have to scrape out the dirt each time I grease the mower.
My belly mounted Mott has a grease zerk on each end of the cutter bar. The zerk is mounted in the end cap/bearing shield.
Gear box. I don't know. No experience

Thanks. I found 4 more grease fittings! Total of 6.
Haven't found any fittings for the main cutting shaft, though. Will look more tonight.

In the link I provided above, click on FHC-4-16-60.
The cutter shaft grease zerks are located on part #9 and 16. Check the caps for a hole for a previous zerk location.

Thanks, Eugene. This isn't my exact model but I bet the grease fittings are the same. I'll look tonight. Appreciate the help.

Nomad, how do you like that Mott flail ? I'd kinda like to find one for my 154 to knock down some field behind my house and where I hunt. Do you like it better than a 3pt blade mower ?

I have a standard Cub with belly mounted flail mower and a 154 with creeper gear and a 3260 mower deck. The 154 with creeper gear will beat the standard cub with flail mower for knocking down tall grass and weeds.FrankenCub wrote:Nomad, how do you like that Mott flail ? Biggest problem with the flail mower is that stringy grass gets wound up around the cutter bar. Next problem is that the standard Cub does not have a creeper gear- won't go slow enough for the flail mower to digest the really tough weeds and grass.
Actually, for mowing pasture I use a WD Allis Chalmers and 5 foot IH trailer type mower.

My 154 does have the creeper so that's a plus. I did have a 3260 mower for it but after long thought about how bad condition it was in and I really don't want a belly deck, it went to the scrap yard. What I'll be mowing is mostly hay that isn't baled anymore behind my house, and golden rod with patches of briares where I hunt. Last year I watched an 8pt walk through it and only seen the tops of his antlers lol. I probably shouldn't be too picky about what I look for here as there doesn't seem to be many of either around. A lot of options here for the standard Cub and everything bigger though.

FrankenCub:
Sorry i never checked back on this string. I love the flail mower! I do have to use creeper gear in high grass. The flail will work great on your golden rod and ok in the briar patch. Tall thick grass becomes more of a problem and AVOID VINES (BITTERSWEET, ETC.) at all costs--they do wrap around.
I also found that it will not cut thin steel cable that is hiding in the grass.
I do not have a blade mower for the 3 PH so I cannot compare. I also have the loader on front which does seem to weigh the whole thing down at times.

No problem Nomad, I'm not in much hurry at the moment. Took my creeper out plowing snow so I need to fix that first. Not really sure which direction I will go with it yet, probably depend on what I can find around here without having to drive a couple hundred miles to find one. I was using my Cub Cadet for it, but just takes too long. I do have a Haban sickle bar that I could build a mount for and drive from the PTO if put some effort into it.

Re: Mott Flail Mower CLB 60
Sounds like you found the grease fittings. One of mine I replaced the cutter shaft bearings with sealed ones, but the holder still has zerks.
I found sharpening the blades (rear facing edge) helps a lot. So did replacing the 'speed up pulley' with a standard one!
One other thing they don't like is cut saplings, blue tarps and of course poison ivy
