The lubrication manual instructs to remove the plugs on the distributor drive and install a zerk and then apply grease. Is there a good reason why the zerk should be removed and the plug put back in place? Does anyone just leave the zerk there for the next lubrication cycle?
Any idea why a plug is used rather than just factory installing a zerk?

Curious minds need to know.

I do. See no reason to remove the zerks and reinstall the plugs.

My guess, a plug cost a fraction of a cent less than a zerk. Frank Perdue use to say profits are not made in dollars and cents, but in fractions of a cent.

I believe it is to remove the temptation to over grease it. Most grease fittings are on a daily/10 hour service interval. The distributor is 6 months/500 hours. IH probably decided for those that don't follow instructions that no grease ever was better than 5 or 6 shots every day.
