Only on 12v system. If you put on pos gnd 6v and decide to upgrade to 12v what can you do with it? JMHO.

Would you use Electronic Ignition? Not a chance. Just my opinion.

For $15- you can have a spare set of points and condenser on the parts shelf. Can you stock spare parts for your electronic ignition system? Where are you going to get parts on Sunday, when the electronic ignition system fails?

Edit: The same spare parts for a standard ignition system fit my 154 and standard Cub.

They are trouble free if you dont leave the switch on, they have a 30 month warranty on them if you use the Pertronix they have a hot spark. I like em, some dont like the cost

I figure that I carry a piece of fine sand paper in my wallet so I can clean the ignition points anytime my tractor with ignition points stalls. I use the grit side first to clean them then the paper side to remove grit from the points. You can't do that with electronic ignition. I just ordered point flies from eBay.

Well, nobody has really answered your questions.

Benefits: Easier starting (although not real noticible if you previously had a tractor that was tuned correctly), hotter spark, more consistant spark.

Drawbacks: Initial Cost (however, in the long run I'd say both cost the same once you've had to replace points, coil, or rebuild a generator)

So, if I had a tractor that the whole ignition system was shot, or in need of major repairs, yes, I would spend the money to go with electrnic ignition, especially if it's planned as a tractor you want to use every day.

If I were "restoring" a tractor that will only be used occasionally, or if it only needed a couple of things here and there to get it running, I'm not sure I'd spend the money on the upgrade.

I like em.

They say they will burn up if the ignition is left on and they do cost 80 bucks.

I like them on my mowing Cub. It did increase the HP enough that I noticed it. Has been on the tractor for a couple of years now and zero issues.

No I would not put them on all my tractors and I always have extra points and stuff around.

Thats just my 2 cents worth.

Interesting discussion on various types of ignition systems. Take a close look at the performance differences in the first 3 or 4 lines of the chart near the bottom of the discussion.

Hotter spark, open up the spark plug gap. Hotter spark doesn't create any more power from the combustion of the air fuel mixture. If your tractor's distributor cam lobes are unevenly worn, then the electronic ignition system will alleviate the problem.

well i dont own one of theses little guys YET but i will tell you in my youth i did spend quite a bit of my weekends at a 1/4 mile track and as far as staying in bracket, points or stock hei was not to good.
reliability takes a real boost.
power increase was also nice.
so YES YES YES
HOWEVER i will always have a stock setup well oiled in an ammo can in the barn

Most of the players are at RPRU, but I seem to remember a Dyno test several years at Bigdog's Tug. Two runs were made. The first one was tuned with original points. The second run was with electronic ignition and no other changes. A noticeable increase in HP was made due to the new setup.

I have the Pertronix on my 184. Have been using the pertronix for 3 years now.
It never seems to hiccup. Very reliable. Easy to install and easy to time. There is no guessing about the point gap (dwell time) and no more wear. The pickup is magnetic and there are no that contact each other or wear out.

It just eliminates things that go wrong. Look around the forum at how many people struggle with points, timing, dwell, and no-start issues due to welded points or bad condensers. Make your life a little easier.

I really think the quality of ignition parts has gone down lately. Luckily I have some backup IH kits in the original package (selling one on ebay now).

Setting the gap on points is a bit of dexterity test. There are NO moving parts in a Pertronics set, it is sealed so there is no 'corrosion' or 'burn' issues (point file, dollar bill, fine sandpaper). Essentially it is a 'proximity' switch instead of 'contact' switch. The big downside, as mentioned, is if you leave the key on with it not running there is a chance of burning out a Pertronics. But as Yogie says they have a decent warranty.

Certainly a lot less finicky. Also, it doesn't look 'original' for someone that looks close. In the very long run it is probably a better 'value'.

Thanks for all the replies. As a former Street racer I know about points - Dual points - Gm electronic ignition and the new hot electronic ignition.
I want to hear if there were problems with the ignitions.

I have 2 Cubs running pertronix and have had one in my Cockshutt 20 for close to 10 years. All are working great! I've probably installed a dozen or so for others, with no complaints from anyone. Yes, hotter spark will increase combustion efficiency, resulting in an increase in both torque and horsepower. We did the dyno test at Cubfest 06 (I think) and none of us expected the nearly 10% increases we got. You betcha I'll use them!

I just took a look at this article. Their text all makes sense and follows the conventional wisdom about the various systems. However, I have a hard time convincing myself that their table of data supports the arguments. Enough of the table shows more horspower with points to make me think their differences are all noise and they didn't get a meaningful number out of the whole exercise.

(Eugene, I think that is the conclusion you were hinting at.)
