Farmall Cub

My shifter or clutch is gone crazy. I can put it in 2nd it will reverse. I can put it in 1st and I get 3rd.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd be willing to bet that your shifter has come apart. The cup inside the cover that is welded to the shifter has a bad history of breaking off, causing the pattern to get sloppy.

How do you fix it ?

Remove the shifter cover from the transmission. Then disassemble the shifter (knob, spring and pattern cup from the bottom). Then you can remove the rod and cup. If in fact it's broken, you can weld it back together and reassemble. Weld it top and bottom to prevent it from breaking again, but pay real close attention to the direction of the shifter to the alignment pin inside the cover. They must be very close, if not perfectly aligned, to prevent the shifter from hitting the sheet metal on each side after installation.

That is a good link Bill. The only aspect it doesn't show is the alignment pin that prevents the shifter from turning.

I guess I'm a idiot for not thinking about this but this didn't start until I had the hydro. serviced. I had the oil filter and fluids changed by a reputable lawn mower /tractor mechanic. It was fine when it left and crappy when it came back. any thoughts ?

There's no mechanical link to the problem, however, my guess would be that someone just slammed the shifter around and it finally broke. Chances are that it would have broke on you the next time you used it. It's a really common problem. You "can" use it as it is, but you have to be more deliberate about your shifting, and grab the shifter down part way on the arm and make it go in the direction it is supposed to. I've had a 154 like that for years, and just haven't fealt like fooling with taking the fenders off to get the transmission cover off. Yea, it's a PITA, but it works.

When you go to weld it back together, remember to get the slot aligned with the shifter.
