Oil pan woes

I know this is going to sound crazy but I pulled my oil pan on my 185 changed my gasket ( there was only pieces of the old one left) and now my bolts will not line back up. And yes it's turned the right way. I've pulled tugged and strained to no avail. They are about a quarter inch off what am I doing wrong? The pan needs to go forward but I'm totally stumped on how to get it there. :shock: :? :cry: :?:

I usually have to loosen the steering cross member in order to get to the front bolts of the oil pan. Could it be that the pan is hitting the cross member and not letting it go far enough forward for the bolt holes to line up?

That's what I figured. Can you loosen and slide them over? I looked at it and couldn't tell if the motor mounts was hooked to it or not. I started to loosen the bolts and move it but was afraid the motor would fall.

You can remove all four bolts holding the cross member and the motor will stay where it is. The motor mounts actually rest on the frame rails so it's stable even without the front bolts in place. The cross member can then be moved out of the way so you can get the oil pan in position and put the front bolts in it.
