Snow plow via wheel horse

I just got my 184 this summer after my old Wheel Horse gave it up in a big way.I can say I can't be happier with this little tractor. My question to all is I still have my 54inch dozer blade that I've really put through its paces and held up well.I want to put it under the 184 by means of a mid mount bar with the wheel horse quik hitch attached to a 2inch box welded to plates that could be bolted in the holes in front of the mid rock shaft.By getting the front rock shaft I would get my lift and moving my angle handle back a bit it should work.Is the frame stout enough to handle the back force? The blade has a 3 spring trip on it so it shouldn't be to bad but I don't want to bend or crack the frame. Thanks All. Dan. Ps. This site is the best for all kinds of info.

Sounds like an aweful lot of fab work.
The 184 can push snow well. This normally requires wheel spacers and chains as well.
I don't know if a road-grater style would be better than the dozer style blade. There is a dozer style blade that was designed for the numbered series loboy tractors. I have also used a 3-point hitch mounted blade. (if you have that option) I recommend wheel weights on the front. Additional options include a 60" snowthrower.

There isn't a lot of room under the 184 though. If you picked up a blade to its highest setting, it wouldn't leave a lot of clearance space (maybe 3-4"). You should also consider protecting the oil pan in case you get high-centered on the blade. As for the strength of the frame, the weak point is near the back end on the right side. Typical mounting points are the bottom of the final drives and the rockshaft.

Hay,thanks for the reply.it would be a real easy job tell the truth. If you saw how a wheel horse blade hooks up off the rear axle.I just thought I would put it back in service this winter on the drive.Might be better to sell or trade for an IH plow.

There certainly is something to say about having attachments that are designed for the tractor.

I know the wheel horse blade that you are talking about, and the 184 tractor both very well. I think you have a good idea! The frame of the 184 is pleanty strong enough to handle what you want to do. I would try to find a point on the frame where you can bolt both up from the bottom and through the side of the frame, just to give some more support. Or, make a plate that bolts up under the frame, may be where you can get bolts about a foot apart (front to back) under the frame of the 184. Then make your mounting quick hitch down from the plate. Any way you go with it, if you spread out the load on the frame, it will hold up better and last longer. But, you're right, this isn't a difficult fab job, and the 54" blade is a good size for the 184. If you have the wide turf tires, you'll be plowing a narrower path than your tires, but that's not a big deal. Get us some pictures!!!!

Yes,looking at my frame I thought about bolting a 3/8 plate on each side of the frame in the holes in front of the ram dropping down about 8 inches with a 2inch heavy box tubing welded to the inside of the plates to bolt the Wheel Horse quick hitch.I thought if it looked weak I could run a trailer from the front to take some of the stress off.I haven't put anything to paper yet, wanted to run it by this crew. Thanks all, Dan

That should be fine. The factory snow blades just mount to the front of the frame with 1/4" plates bolted to the outside of the frame. They use 4 bolts on each side.

Does your blade use the hand lever to angle it? I know the smaller Wheel Horse blades have that, but I'm not sure about the 54" blade. If it does, that would be cool if you can make it work as well. Again, some simple fabrication and it should work. Maybe use a choke/throttle style cable to actuate the pin rather than the solid rod that WH used?

Gitractorman, yes it does have the lever and it will be easy to move it back enough to use.I. Will have to lengthen the rod is all after moving the mounting bracket back. The only thing that is going to be different will be the plow sticking out about 2 1/2 feet.
