Cub 184 with a 3160A Mower deck- Belt length question

Postby Dieselrider » Tue May 08, 2012 11:41 am

I have a 184 cub low boy with the IHC 3160 A mower deck on it. The drive belt that runs from the pto is shot so, off to NAPA with the old belt. Parts man measures around the outside of the belt (his tape measure only goes to 120 inches) and he comes up with a total of 151 inches total after adding up both numbers. So we order a B-148 which is supposed to be 151 inches. Doesn't fit at all- too short. I measure the new belt in the same manner he did with a longer tape measure and come up with 150 inches around the outside of the belt. So I measure the old belt and come up with 152 inches. In the mean time I find that at some point I had written down a number on the service manual "B-152" for the power belt. If I look on NAPA's web site a B-152 is 155 inches long which would be way too big, or so I think.

Could the belt number, at one time, have been B-152 and actually been 152 inches long? (which is how I thought belts were numbered. A letter to designate the width followed by the length). Would the B-148 (which is supposed to be 151 inches) actually be 150 to allow for stretching? That would make sense then to assume a 152 inch belt would come new as 151 to allow for stretching as well. Does anyone have an IHC number for the power belt for the 3160A Deck when on a 184 low boy? My manuals do not have that deck in them. Thank you.

I do not have a 3160A mower so I do not know the answer but the numbered belts: 4L, 3L etc are measured and numbered according to their outside diameter. The Lettered belts: A, B, etc are measured and numbered according to the inside diameter. So a B-152 is 155 inches outside diameter, 152 inside diameter. The difference between the outside and inside is 2 inches for a A belt , 3 inches for a B belt, 4 inches for a C belt.

From your description the B-152 sounds right.

I don't have one to look at, but many of the mower decks on Lo-boys, have adjustments in the back where you can slide the mower deck forward/back to tighten up the belt. I know the Woods mowers work this way, but cannot remember about the IH mowers. Just something to check.

I just replaced the belt on my 184 & 3160a mower deck. I'll have to check the part number, but the IH part number does not really give you a cross reference to the belt size.
On the 184 / 3160A the only adjustment is on the mule drive pulleys. I did have to move mine way up (shorter) as this belt is not stretched out and worn.

This is the part # info on the CNH site. I am pretty sure this is the part # that I bought. I really struggled with the length in the description though it did fit the 184 & 3160A.
