Poppet Ball Bearing Fell In Transmission

Postby ericcloe » Thu Sep 01, 2011 9:53 pm

I have been working on my grandfathers cub lo boy 154 for the past few days. I replaced the drive shaft and clutch brake and pressure plate flywheel. My question is I dropped a poppet bearing in the bottom of the transmission. I found another one at a local hardware store the same size and put it in and started it up but haven't put it in gear yet. Should I worry about getting it out of the transmission or will it be ok in the bottom. If so where it the drain plug for the fluid cause I tried a magnet with no luck.

It will be okay at the bottom of the trans. You are not the first person to do this.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Is there a drain plug to try to get it out?

You can fish them out with a magnet glued to the end of a dowel.
It will likely just roll around down there, but I would make an effort to fish it out.

Some, maybe all, numbered series have the hydraulic suction line leaving the bottom of the transmission. You may want to get that steel ball out of the transmission. Just put a bucket under the rear of the transmission and take off the rear cover. You should be able to see the bottom of the transmission and the steel ball.

I dont think the ball will be in the back of the transmission, you do need to get it out. Try a magnet on a stick

I'm kind of late reading this thread, but Landreo is correct. Drain the fluid and take the rear cover off and you will find the ball. There is a hole through the bottom wall inside the transmission (I presume for fluid flow) and the ball will roll through that hole into the rear of the transmission. I dropped one into the front of the transmission and searched for two hours with magnets, mirrors, etc. and never found the ball. Finally took off the rear cover and there it was!
Hopefully this will save someone else from wasting two hours of frustrating time!

do as Landreo & Charlie says. I found mine by removing rear cover and gently rocking tractor back and forth, ball found the hole, and I could reach in and grab it with a long needle nose wrench.

Gots to remove it. It will get into the 3/4'' or 5/8'' tubing on the hydraulic suction line. While there is a filter on that line it will stop the flow of oil and burn up the pump. Murphy's Law 101 trust me.

Sounds like a fishing trip in november for those pesky poppit ball fish...... the bait is a stick magnet and a flashilte. :)):

I was lucky at the casino on my last trip i played the green "00" on the wheel and won $375 right away. I bought my family the buffet supper and turned and burned with the rest. But as far as luck i never really have any.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
