Finaly trailered the tractor home last month and started making repairs. I haven't been able to fire it up because the starter dad had rebuilt is bad. The starter drive unit is stuck in the extended position and doesn't retract. I noticed it has a drive unit with everything enclosed. I remember taking one of these apart on a farmall years ago to replace the brushes and I think the starter drive had an external clock spring that could be swapped out but this one is sealed and isn't serviceable. That made me wonder if someone had put the wrong drive unit on it or if this is some new style drive unit. Also, there wasn't a return spring at the end of the shaft between the gear and the nose cone. I pushed out the pin at the base of the drive and was going to run it into NAPA to see if they could match it up with a replacement but even though the drive seems loose it doesn't slide off the shaft. Anyone have any thoughts on this? It's a Delco 12v starter.

Re: 1978 184 starter drive
I talked to dad this morning and he said it was hanging up on him the last few times he started it so I'm thinking it's defective. I looked online and found the same style drive, but I still have to get the old one off the shaft to replace it. I got the retaining pin out but the drive will not slide off the shaft. Am I missing something or is it time to get out the 5 iron?

It looks like maybe #15, (a pin),: http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=cub_cadet&mn=184+Tractor&dn=0030300019, has to be driven out to get the drive off.

Hey Phazer,
thanks for taking the time to post the diagram link. Once I saw the pin I took out was the only thing holding the Bendix on, I broke out the dead-blow hammer. After a few slaps it started to move. Turns out there is a burr or piece of debris stuck inside the Bendix that kept it from sliding off the shaft.
I just wanted to be sure I didn't miss something before I started beating on it and mess up the shaft.
Thanks everyone,
Bill

Re: 1978 184 starter drive
Anyone know who has a starter drive in stock for the IH 184. 154. 185... Delco # 1963642 or Facet # 480362 10t, CW rotation? I've had 2 orders cancled because they were "out of stock". Everyting local has turned up a dead end. I hate to imagine what the IH/Case dealer wants for one.
