154 pto clutch option

Postby JGtools » Mon Jan 25, 2010 12:33 pm

Couple threads down I read of possibly taking a electric clutch unit from 185 tractor and making to work on a 154 model tractor. My question, Has anyone done this, would it be cheaper then a standard 154 dry pto clutch assembly. Thanks, Jim

185 does NOT have ele. pto clutch!(mine dont and book dont show any for it)---184 might have.

As far as trying to put one in, the cost and hassel of making it fit are bout the same, around $500 to $650 for used units, IF you can find good ones! New disk kit and washers are $260 at your IH dealer. I only need the wavy washers and a snap ring to fix mine and cant find them here local,(still looking for supplier). thanks; sonny

Sonny, Ya, I have read a few more things, I guess just the 184 had electric pto, but not the 185 or 154. I will probably call messicks tomorrow , see what they have. I will probably have to get the kit to repair what I all need. Thanks, and good luck on yours. Jim

Just my opinion, but I think IH either found the ele. clutch too costly for them to use on the other models,---OR it would be too reliable and they would lose big bucks on parts and service!
Either way, I do wish the 185 did have the ele. unit on it!---(couldnt be any worse than what it came with). thanks; sonny

I believe that the electric clutch was introduced because of the increasing 'safety mandates'. Because of the safety interlock wiring on the 184, it is impossible to engage the electric starter with the PTO engaged - thus accessories can not be inadvertently turned by hitting the start switch, resulting in more five fingered hands.

185 is newer than 154 and184,--so why did they go back to the regular clutch on it? thanks; sonny

Sonny, the 185 was built before the 184. I never understood why they numbered them as they did, but the 184 was the last of the IH C60 powered Loboys.
