1973 154 lo boy engine rear crank oil seal
I have engine block back from machine shop, I ordered a complete gasket set for engine overhaul. I have read that the oil seal provided with gasket kits are not of good quality, and can leak soon after assembly. where can I find a good quality crank oil seal, thanks ,Jim

Jim,
Here is a link to an excellent source for the rear seal replacement http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Specialty%20Services/Phillip%20Lenke/index.html. Althought no reference is made to the rear seal (web page has not been updated yet), you can be assurred that Phil will deliver a quality product, '10 feet tall and bullet proof.' You will need to send him your rear seal retainer and he will return one with the seal in place and ready for installation. Good luck.
Bill

I would think you would handle this the same way as a farmall cub.
Send the retainer to Rick Prentice for refurb.

I thought Rick wasn't doing them at this time.

There are two versions, but they are interchangeable. Yours would be the R2 version.

If Jim already has the R2 version on the Int 154, he shouldn't need to send his to Phil for refurbishing, right? The new seal will fit properly in an R2 retainer, I thought?

Can the orginal seal be had from IH??? I'm about to rebuild my c60 for my FEL and i don't want any problems down the road.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

mine was part of the overhaul kit from napa. I would think case /IH would have the seals. I will look on the IH web site parts catalog, and check it out. Jim

To my knowledge, there is no currently available seal that will fit properly in either retainer. That's why Rick and Phil do the fix.

Well, sort of... You can get a seal with the same part number, but it's apparently slightly different in size. Add to that, the fact that the retainers stretch for a number of reasons and you get a leaky seal.

Re: 1973 154 lo boy engine rear crank oil seal
Bill, I'll bet if you take your retainer into the IH dealer, they'll sell you their $25.00+ seal that probably will push in with your fingers(unless it's a real late retainer). Their reply will be to use silicone or buy one of their $200 new retainers. I've seen and received(from angry customers) their non-fitting seals for over 4 years now. I sure wish one of the "Top Dogs" from IH would care and address this issue. It'd save alot of us cub owners aggrevation and added expenses. We can't get the orginal seal from IH??
