Oil Leak

Postby bookman51 » Sat Jan 23, 2010 12:43 pm

I have an oil leak under the rear end of my 1969 Cub 154. It only leaks when it is running and for while after running. I assume it is the hydraulics somewhere. I have a belly mower and use the hydraulics to raise and lower the mower. Try as I might, I cannot find just where it is leaking (a little like sometimes trying to find where a roof leaks). Any tricks to finding the leak. . .and then to repair it? Any common places to look? I assume it is a seal somewhere.

Kind of a neat tractor. Much easier to get on and off than my regular Cub, Farmall A and Super C. However, I think in the past 14 years I pretty well have replaced the drive train (clutch, drive shaft, etc.). Maybe it is now new enough to run another forty years! Live PTO is nice when mowering, but not the power of my International A that has a belly mower on it (but no live PTO)

Clean it up good and throw talcum powder all over it where it could possibly be leaking. You'll find it. Grump

Repairing it will depend on where it's leaking

If it is near the middle between the wheels, then it is likely hydraulic oil leaking out around the PTO shaft, then running down and dripping off of the differential. Pretty common problem, and you're tranny is either over full, or has absorbed enought water to make it over full. It could be that running the mower throws enough oil up to leak a little around the PTO, but if the oil level is correct, even this would not typically happen. The PTO shaft seal is easy to replace, but if the oil level is correct, it will not happen.

If it is near one of the tires, then it is likely the final drive pan gasket leaking.

These are the two most common oil leaks in the back of a cub or lo-boy. If you can not narrow it down to one of these, then you have gaskets/seals where the axle extensions bolt to the transmission case, and where the final drive bolts to the axle extensions. These typically do not leak, and unfortunately may be a precursor to a bigger problem, loose bolts in one of the pieces. Sometimes these do happen occasionally, especially if it is a machine which has not been restored/refurbished, and has had a long life of mowing, plowing, towing heavy loads, etc.

The 154 does have a hydraulic pump to run the lift, and there are a couple of hoses and valves under the tractor as well as the oil filter and pump. Typically these do not have problems, but they are always posibilities. However, if you have a hydraulic system leak, then it is typically pretty violent, spraying lots of oil everywhere, and also accompanied by the lift not working properly.

Take a closer look and let us know.

I'm going to guess without seeing it its the return hydraulic line leaking when its running. Its on top of the shifter housing on a newer 154 or on the bottom were the suction line is on an older 154. I have both tractors.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

If it is leaking in the same place my 185 is, (on front side behind and below the master clutch, then running back) then it's hyd. leak and GOOD LUCK ON EVER FIXING IT!----I first thought it was just the suction pipe connection was loose,--but notta!---it's above there and running down in that direction too, then also soaked the mower drive belt, rendering it useless!

I still think it's the plate over the shaft bearing cover just below the main clutch input shaft, but cant get up in there to verify that!---There just aint any room to see up in there, let alone get a wrench in there!---I did get the 2 bottom bolts tightened a little with a very small wrench, but cannot get anything on the top two! ---it still leaked if you put any amount of hyd fluid in it, then lift quit working when trans. got empty. thanks; sonny
