drawbar weirdness

Postby Garland Terry » Sun Sep 20, 2009 9:23 pm

I bought a drawbar ofn e-bay a few weeks ago and today I tried to bolt it up, and as usual nothing goes as planned. My 154 has a 3 point. Is there a diffrent setup? I am thinking about cutting the brackets off and welding the drawbar to the three point lower brackets. Any Ideas boys and girls? Otherwise I am the proud owner of a big horse shoe :? :? GT

Hi Garland
Of the 10 or so 154's that I have parted with a 3 point, I have not seen one with a 3 point.

I don't think the drawbar fits with the 3pt hitch. I also purchased a drawbar for my 3pt too. In just looking at it i see it can't fit too. I guess we need a drawbar for the 3pt hitch your right.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Here's a photo of one of my fords with a drawbar. I don't know if the lo-boy # series is cat 1 or 0 but tractor supply sells the bar with the holes in it for both. I don't see why you couldn't use this for a towbar/drawbar?

Here is a picture of where someone copied the "outer - upper" ends of the 3 point lower mounting "J Bar" and welded them onto the top of a "Standard Drawbar" in order to have a drawbar with the 3 point hitch.

Here's a photo of the one on my 641 ford. What's nice is you can back into a trailer and use the 3pt to raise it up and move it and most of the time I don't even get off the tractor and it's EZ on and off when you need the 3pt for something else. No welding required.

Or - you can just use a 3 Point Hitch drawbar adapter.

I can think of three reasons why a permanent draw bar is nice to have.
First it's always there.
second it saves you a foot or two of overall length compared to a bar on the 3pt.
But the best is I can remember standing on the draw bar of my grandfathers standard cub while he mowed.

Nice thing about the cub is just about anything you do is going to be an improvement over what they did at the factory.
So if you have at least a good drill press to go along with your welder and torch , sell the orig hitch back on ebay to someone who doesn't, then make something better.

funny he died over 20 years ago and thinking about riding on the cub, I could swear I just caught a whiff of his pipe.

You need to attach a ball socket end like the arms have so it can swivel at the tractor. Then you can use the 3pt to lift the hitch up and down while the other end is secured to the tractor.

But the "A" frame on the 3pt is agreat idea too.

I have a 3PH on my 154 and wanted to have the original draw bar as well. I made up steel plates, about 4" x 6'' and drilled 4 holes in them. The top two holes bolt up to the sides of the 3PH "J" brackets. Using longer bolts, I bolted the plates to the sides of the "J" brackets, using the same holes as the "J": brackets. The plates stick down about 2" below the existing brackets and provided mounting plates for the draw bar. It works great. I didn't have to do any welding and it stays on the tractor with the 3PH. Just saw this on ebay. Looks like someone sectioned (narrowed) the standard drawbar and then welded it with brackets to the 3 Point lower main mounting bracket. Since it probably does not continue forward to the bullgear mount - it probably is not overly strong. But, it is another persons answer to the problem.
