International 184 Trans Problem

Postby kenneth6140 » Sun Sep 20, 2009 4:13 pm

Hi-

I have an International 184. I am having a hard time engaging & disengaging "Low Range" :!:
-Is this a common problem?
-Is this usually linkage or internal to the trans?
-Is this an expensive fix?
-Any idea on cost?

Thanks,
Ken

Are you talking about the 1st gear or the creeper tranny??

If its the first gear you may have a loose 1st & rev fork in the tranny. The rev gear will pop out when backing up. If your having problems getting it in first it maybe a clutch adjustment.

If its the creeper tranny its another story.

We have to remember these are standard trannys with straight cut gears and sometimes we need to let the clutch pedal up a tad to get the gears to mesh so they can be shifted.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

is this a new problem or has it been going on awhile. My Creeper gets cranky somtimes and ,as Bill wrote, one has to dance the clutch a bit to engage it. also Are you shifting the transmission to neutral and Idleing the engine down. You might try sacrificing a live chicken if that don't work  LOL oh and check the oil and check the oil and check it again! good luck GT
