Dome pistons???

Postby BigBill » Wed Apr 01, 2009 11:58 pm

Why am i seeing all these 154's with domed pistons?

My #3 154 pistons and i see 154's that are parted out on sleezebay with dome pistons too. Was there a big upgrade to dome pistons for the older engines?

What year did the cubs come with these high compression pistons?

If an farmall cub is 9hp, what makes the int154 15hp? And what makes the int185/184 18hp?

Did all the int154's come with dome pistons?
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Isn,t the 9hp rating at the drawbar? With a stripped engine the max torque is at 1400rpm. 12hp at 1600rpm, 13.5hp at 1800rpm, and 15.25hp at 2200rpm. This is a 1962 figure so, increase compression, change the cam, raise the rpm, shuffle some paper and we see an increase in hp. Ted

All the farmall tractors are rated at the drawbar for HP. The Fcub is 9hp (flat top pistons)were the int154 is 15.4hp and the 184 is 18.4hp and the 185 would be 18.5hp if the hp in the numbered series is taken from the cadets.

I was just wondering how the horse power increased thru the years and what was changed first and what was added next to actually see how then went from 9hp all the way to 18hp.

The dome pistons were added for higher compression, the camshaft was changed with more lift and duration which would raise the rpm and the zenith carb added probably with a larger manifold. I guess the timing stayed at 16 degrees total advance on all of them.

I notice a really big difference in power between my fcub and my int154 with the 184 upgrade.

Bill
Of the 154 engines I part, 90% have the dome pistons. I always assumed that IH changed from the flat to dome in the early years. This was probably for more HP. Manual shows 2 different pistons flat-251 241 R2 and dome-405 007 R11 Does anyone know for sure? Hamiltonbob

Bob/guys; I'm wondering what is really done in the hp changes?

C60 engine with flat top pistons 9hp at the drawbar (normal fcub engine)
C60 engine with dome pistons, 15.4hp (154)
C60 engine with dome pistons, 18.4hp/18.5hp (184/185 tractors)

Are the camshafts and distributor timing(advance) different?

I guess some research into this would be needed.

Bill, i know the 184 and 185 have the larger Zenith carb that picks up 2 HP

The chart I saw showed around 12 hp for an Fcub engine stripped. I am not sure about the numbered series but I expect the 15 or 18 hp are not drawbar but are stripped hp. I do not know how much of each change contributed to the increase hp but I would bet most of it came from just increasing the rpm and from changes that allow the increase in rpm.

The fcub hp rating is at the drawbar in the rear i guess the pulling power is actually 9hp.

Now with the cars on the full body car dyno we lose around 100hp thru the drive train.
Example; I had 299 hp at the rear wheels and lost 100hp thru the drivetrain so thats 25%. If the fcub engine is 12hp and its rated 9hp at the drawbar thats 25% of the hp loss thru the drivetrain. Thats shows me that the 25% loss just maybe the rule of thumb in most cases when looking at the horse power. (food for thought)

Are the int154, int185 & the int184 horse powers rated the sameway at the rear drawbar?
