Very different! I expect the starter/generator for a 154 would be much more expensive.

Before you buy another starter/generator for the 154, pull it apart. If the windings are not burn up they can be rebuild quite inexpensively.
Valu-bilt has the starter/generator listed at $159.95 plus shipping and a core charge/exchange.
$750- for a Cub 154. Sounds like a decent price.

To explain a little further, the numbered Lo-Boys have what is called a "starter/generator" like the classic Cub Cadets. They do not have a traditional bell housing mounted ring gear starter like a Cub.
There is a giant belt pulley on the front of the engine that drives the starter/generator. When the tractor is running, it acts like a generator. When you go to start the tractor, it works as a motor to belt drive the engine.

thanks for the input everybody , the 154 has no starter on it , the orig owner took it off to be rebuilt and passed away and his wife did not know where he dropped it off . ,so now i wont even have a core to exchange . i guess i could do some calling around his area and try to see if i am able to locate it . might be a looong shot but i tmay be worth it .

if you need a core to turn in I might be able to locate one at the shop for you. I have tons of stuff like that mixed in with all my starter and alternators. If I can remember to look I'll send you a core free of charge I'll even pay the shipping. I'll let you know and PM me with your address if you are interested.

The bell housing on the 154 does have a starter port thats blocked off with a plate and two screws. The 154 does use a starter/generator. I believe that some guys have installed a ring gear and a starter and replaced the starter/generator with an altenator(like the 184 is). I have seen brand new starter/generators on ebay for cub cadets/154 cubs selling for $99 and up. Beware that one starter/generator turns counter clockwise and the other one turns clockwise so there is a difference between the two types of tractors so make sure you get the correct one.
I just purchased 20 new ball bearings for the starter generators to rebuild them from Ebay(very cheap) and i purchased the starter brushes at NAPA. The front and rear bearing are different too on the starter generator.

I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Brian - the starter generator on the 154 is mounted and belt driven like a regular generator. It bears little resemblence to the standard cub starter.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
