I ran into an old friend last nite who has a 154 LoBoy aprrox. late 60s vintage. He has a tranny problem that I volunteered to ask the experts here at the forum. It jumps out of reverse only. Fine in all forward gears, sometimes it is difficult to even get into reverse, when it does it will jump out.. without warning at any time. Ive run across this in trucks but never in reverse gear, and with the trucks it was the Syncros. Id like to hear from the forum before attempting a cure for him. Thanks much, Frank

I agree with Ralph , As a matter of fact Ralph just sent me a set of shifter forks for a 154 lo boy transmission I'm working on with the same problem.

I had a first and reverse problem witrh my 154 but as soon as i adjusted the two clutch adjustments it works fine now. You need to have .090" gap between the clutch fingers and the throwout bearing and .010" between the tranny flywheel and the pucks on the flywheel brake. Once i adjusted it correctly the grinding gears stopped and it went right into gear and stayed in and it doesn't pop out anymore. The first few times driving the 154 I would shut it off to change gears then i read the manual and figured out to check the clutch adjustment first after it was popping out of gear from not being fully ingaged in gear when i shifted it in. Its a tricky setup but once its right its awesome. You could have more problems but i started with the easiest one first. I got lucky so far.

Thanks Bill I didnt realize clutch adj. was that critical. I'll try that before i call Ralph for a new set of forks. Junkmans Motto: cheap and simple is gooooood.

It could be both problems thats why the forks are bent. Its harder to pull into gear when the clutch isn't adjusted correctly and it won't go all the way into gear when its not adjusted right thus popping out of gear. My 154 is ok now but who knows when i pull it apart it just maybe bent too. I got a funny feeling ralph maybe right too even though i hate to take mine apart and check it right now. The 154 is a great tractor once its fixed/adjusted right. Its a dream to get into gear now. I have no clue what the first gear looks like too nor how long they let it grind to get it into gear.
