Steering shaft removal 185

Postby Bronccat » Tue Jun 01, 2021 6:01 pm

I bought a basket case (they welded the steering wheel on among other things).

I have a donor shaft (assuming all loboys take same shaft) and curious how you remove the shaft?

Or do I need to replace the whole assembly?

TIA

Ross type steering. Assumption on my part based upon Cub Cadets. The shaft comes out of the bottom of the steering sector.

You need to remove the steering wheel. Elevate and block up the front end of the tractor. Unbolt the steering sector. Remove the steering sector from the bottom of the tractor.

Once the steering sector is removed from the tractor, disassemble to remove the shaft.

You will need the sector disassembled because there will be adjustments made during reassembly - - after the shaft is replaced.

Thanks. I have the steering wheel amd tube off and was hoping I could just remove the shaft and not the entire assembly.

I don't think the tube is supposed to come out of the housing. The housing and tube are one unit in the narrow framed Cub Cadets.

Actually, take a look in your parts manual and you will see how the steering sector goes together.

Service manual will have the adjustments required during assembly.

The steering shaft is a inner tube. The outer casing is seperate. If you look at the bottom plug on the lower gear box I believe you can remove the steering shaft with the steering box in the machine. If you have enough height. It’s similar to a cub cadet only bigger.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

You now have enough posts to access the manual server. Click on the quick links at the top left and select PDF Manuals.
The 154,185,and 184 share the same manual. The steering section is the same for all three.

Remove the sector from the tractor. Easier to work on, on the bench. You will need to clean up the sector/remove the old grease.

Thanks - yes, I had them printed last week. Still didn't know if the shaft could be pulled without pulling the entire assembly but looks like it can according to post above. Easy enough to try.

That's the plan if I can't replace the shaft without removing the assembly.
