No spark on cub where to start

Postby Whitecub50 » Sun Oct 18, 2020 9:25 pm

I have a 1976 international cub Loboy 185. I just replaced the coil, points, distributor cap, condenser, rotor, set points to .020 as it calls for and I have no spark? When I put my voltmeter on the coil I have no voltage. I tried with the key on the key off and still no voltage the tractor ran just fine before this I’m not sure what it could be I checked my battery cables the positive cable coming to the starter generator it has 12 V but for some reason I have no spark. Could something be grounded out causing there to be no voltage to the coil?

Fuse on the dash board? Not sure but it’s left out.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

There is a solenoid, oil pressure start switch, ignition switch, and possibly a clutch safety switch in the start circuit.

Perhaps something open.

Or the oil pressure start switch not opening up when oil pressure is up. The oil pressure switch grounds out the ignition circuit until oil pressure is up enough to open the switch.

Does the engine crank over?

I would start following the wires back to their source. Look for bare wires, cracked insulation, or broken connections.

Disconnect the electrical wire from the oil pressure switch. Cover the end of the disconnected wire - so that it is doesn't ground or short out. Located on the side of the oil filter housing.

See if the tractor starts.

No start. Check you igniton points installation. Points could be shorted out where the condenser and points spring attach to the insulation block on the side of the distributor.

So when I unhook the oil pressure switch wire and turn the key on I have 12 V at my coil now as to where before I didn’t what the tractor still won’t start with the oil pressure switch disconnected even though I have voltage at the coil and distributor what could it possibly be now???

We are gaining on it.

Leave the oil pressure switch disconnected.

Remove the coil wire from the distributor. Place the bare end of the wire about 1/8" from engine block. Crank the engine over, checking for spark.

Spark, check the ignition timing.

No spark, something, problem, in the interior of distributor.

Wait on the oil pressure switch until you solve the start problem.

Did you remove the distributor to replace the ignition points?

Like a cub, Prime the oil pump before starting!

Remove the Petronix and reinstall the points ignition.

Did you install the Petronix with a no start situation?

Wow! Figured it out, the distributor was 180 out after installing electronic ignition. They said you would have to adjust timing but not 180 degrees. Runs like a champ! Idols smooth and has a load of power. Thanks for all the insight, much appreciated
