Woods 59LB mower deck

Postby treeman53 » Tue Oct 15, 2019 4:13 pm

What is the secret to removing the middle (3pulley) pulley from the spindle? Did the 2 outside pulleys, and got them loose, then pulled the taper lock with my gear puller. Middle one is driving me crazy! Stripped one of the bolts (after moving it to the removal holes), then tried hammering on a drift through the same holes. It appears the pulley may be too big to drop down? Anyway, any info on how to get it apart would be greatly appreciated.

Well, actually; there is a lot of info about that stored here. Some of these replies are unique and a guy isn't able to pound it out again.
The inside collapsible bushing is a tapered sleeve which grips tight when compressed by the top bolts. Rain or whatever seized the tapers together. There were more than one threaded hole to loosen that bushing and balanced equally, separate it.

Dang. The sections need be separated and there you are. One way ( chisel , putty knife) or another.

Yes, I realize how the tapered sleeve works, worked fine on the outside pullies. Problem is the triple pulley. Will it work the same way? Is there enough space left below it, to allow it to drop? Is there a different method used for the triple pulley?

This is where first-hand knowledge serves both of us. I don't even have a Woods deck but have dealt with larger sheaves of same design. I'm sure we will know more..and :D

You already have the others off, so you know how these work. It is too bad one hole stripped because this is a balanced pressure thing. The direction of torque is part of this because there is a key being grasped. A knock in opposite direction should free

I would snug the good pulling bolt and put a pry bar under the taper lock on the bad side then smack the pulley with a big hammer After a few hits snug the bolt again and repeat as needed until off. Or instead of a pry bar, drive a wedge such as a chisel.
Or you could drill and tap the stripped hole to the next size bolt.
Or if there is enough room for a nut between the stripped hole in the bushing and pulley you’d have to hold the nut with a wrench.

Did you get the pulley off? If so how did you do it?

I took injectors out of a 450 Farmall some time ago that seized in. The first three came out by threading bolts into the holes to press injectors out.
Fourth had to be soaked in penetration (PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench, and Kroil) daily for about 30 days before a well aimed smack with a hammer popped it out in my hand.

Soak it in penetration while you try the pry bar and good removal bolt trick
