thinking about buying a lo-boy

Postby tom coffey » Fri Dec 21, 2018 11:03 am

I bought this JC Penny garden tractor the other day. I'm thinking about going back and buying the Lo-Boy in the background. What can you tell me about it from the pic?

Thanks.
I bought a '54 Power King and a 70s Jacobsen from the same seller. He has 12-15 more garden tractors that I might bring home too. :{_}: :{_}: :{_}:

Eh, it has the single-pedal brakes? And the front fiberglass looks to be in good shape?

Thanks Sonny. Info like the bit about the PTO clutches is exactly what I needed. Probably dumb question but- any way of getting an idea of condition of said clutches without starting the engine? Probably not.
Any more tips I should know ? Thanks again.

If interested, go back and do an inspection.

Appears to be a mower deck under the debris in front of the right rear tire. Clean off the debris and check the mower's condition. Mower parts are expensive.

3-point, creeper, engine free?

I purchased my 154 planning on using it as a parts tractor, knowing the tractor was running and mowing several months prior to buying.

Parts tractor. If it were closer I would take a look at the tractor. I need one of the rear tires and purchase if priced right, less than the cost of one new tire and tube.

If you pull up on the pto handle and it locks into place with a firm snap, you can be fairly sure the pto clutch works. If the handle won't stay locked upward, the clutch surely will need to be overhauled or adjusted.
Make sure the engine will turn over, either by battery power or by just turning the fan blade by hand.
No way to be sure the drive clutch works unless the engine is running.
I restore and sell the numbered LoBoys and would consider this to be an $800 tractor if it's not running.
I'm located in eastern N.C.

The lo-Boy would be find but that is over. That J. C. Penny is actually an Allis /Simplicity model. Very heavily built 42" decks and such. They had a great transmission/ transaxle and the planetary differential unit set at one side. It was a separate unit with the 12 1/2 hp Briggs.
Older Jacobsens are fine too, so you did good.
