Cub 154 Oil Light Holder

Postby bookman51 » Sun Jul 08, 2018 2:02 pm

I need a new oil light holder for my cub 154. I did an Internet search and could not find one at Bobs, Steiners or Yesterdays Tractors. Does anyone sell them or does anyone know if they are a standard item I might get at NAPA? Thanks

Measure the hole diameter.

Lots of products available. Search using 12V red panel light, or flush mounted snap in 12V socket with red bulb. Actually your auto parts store may have one hanging on the wall or their display rack.

But there are a lot more out there.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Eugene, Well not quite so easy. It is no longer available from Case-IH. I went to four auto parts stores before I found a socket that might work and then it is just one wire. I either have to solder a ground wire on it or take my chances that it grounds through the frame good enough. I am taking a look at the old socket and see if there is something I can do too fix it. A wire broke off inside it and it is not staying in the socket....after 49 years I guess it is due. Thanks.

I'm not sure but it looks like this harness includes the bulb socket.

Terminology is a little messy here. The harness includes what indy61 (and I and nearly anyone else) call a socket. It is just the "back side" of a lamp. It snaps into another piece, which IH called a "socket assembly". There were two versions of the socket assembly, with the late fitting a slightly larger hole than the early. Both versions of the socket assembly have been discontinued. A lot of sources have a substitute for the later version, which is a complete lamp assembly with a short lead.

What exactly are you needing? The socket that is on the harness, or the socket assembly? If the socket assembly, which version (27/32 hole in dash or 29/32 hole in dash)?

Hamilton Bobs also has this, which I assume snaps into the factory dash "socket assembly" and harness connector.

Steiner has this which may be a suitable replacement.

I replaced my oil pressure light with a cool little LED light that I got from NAPA

Does it still flash? I'm wondering because the flasher unit utilizes the current consumed by the light to generate the heat necessary to bend the bi-metallic strip.

The numbered series did not use a flasher for the oil Tellite. The bulb used had a built in blinker and was a #257 bulb. Bulbs with built in blinkers were more common years ago but may be hard to find in 2018. Other bulbs or LED lights will work but will not blink.

I never thought about that bulb. I just thought the pressure switch was set right and the bulb was picking up the pulsed or full pressure when it went off. It is so well to know the right bulb.

Just the socket that is on the harness. I ended up taking it apart and doing some soldering. It appears to work now. The only thing I could find locally was a single wire which depends on the ground to the holder. However, the dash for Cub 154 is fiberglass. I tried doing some soldering but gave up ad went back to fixing the original. Thanks

Interesting. I looked and the #257 do show up on some sites for older vehicles. On one site they are listed as a a Ford Pickup Interior Light Bulb for 1956-1977. And for $2.95 I put in a different bulb #1895. Seems to fit fine. I will see how long it lasts.

It is interesting great how these topics work. I had my dash out maybe 15 years ago and thought it was a regular bulb. It still worked then, so I left it in place. Man, If I hadn't read this topic, I would be flummoxed to replace it. Thanks All of you ! :D
