184 shift knob

Another stupid question, but...
Did the shifter on the 184 step down in diameter to allow the rubber knob to fit? I bought the new knob (it did not have one) and the hole diameter is about half the diameter of the shifter. Either there is a trick to installing, or , part of my shifter broke off at some time in the past....

Are you sure you have the right knob? It's different for the 184 than for the F Cubs. HamiltonBobs (sponsor at the bottom of the page) sells the correct one and you can check to see if that is what you have.

The shifter lever (metal part) doesn't step down in diameter

I ordered it from Hamilton Bob's. It has the insert with it. I thought it would be a simple "push fit", but the hole is half the diameter of the shift lever. Though maybe there was a trick, like heating it up, to get it to push on...

If there is evidence of a grub screw near the top of the lever, it was modified. It does look sawn off but I can only say don't force the new knob over something too tight for (just as you know) it could spit. Custom knobs had threads and locking screws but didn't fit that diameter, so maybe someone resorted to cutting. The original knob has a long body sleeve and doesn't rattle off. My 1971 has the original knob and you can twist it around or gently pull it off but has never split.

Surprised, because Hamilton Bob only deals with the Lo Boy's, and that is where I got it.

I think you have the right knob, but don't know why the hole is smaller. Did you call HamiltonBob's and ask about it?

Is the knob all rubber? My 184 shifter looks just like yours and so does the knob. Mine just shoves on with a tight friction fit. Might put a couple drops of dish soap on the lever and shove it on.

Maybe I'm overthinking this but maybe there is a technique. It looks so tight that it is like shoving against a pocket of air which cannot be compressed further. That's what keeps mine on, the vacuum. So perhaps a slender narrow shim like an extended paperclip could allow the air to escape. When removed, the vacuum would stick like glue.
