Re: 154-Converting starter-gen to std starter & ring gear
this is something I was planning to do with the 154 I just bought......the farmall cub 6 volt or 12 volt starter will work with a slight trimming on the frame.......not a fan of how slow the starter/generator system works on it and that is why I planned the conversion.

Stan the standard cub starter ring gear will fit on a 154 fly wheel. At least on a 1974.

Pete, Thanks for the information. Mine is a '72, I've not been able to work on this lately as "life" gets in the way. It's still on my "project list".

Re: 154-Converting starter-gen to std starter & ring gear
There's a vertical gusset in the frame when you remove the starter hole cover that needs a radious cut in it to match the bore that the starter goes in. I was thinking of using the push button switch to replace the solinoid. Less things to go wrong. The orginal 154 flywheel is cutout to fit the fcub ring gear. You need st sweat it on then c clamp it so it stays in place when it cools. Check to see if the ring gear is beveled on the inside so it may go on one way. I believe the teeth are angled so that goes towards the started. Wether you Dutchman the ring gear to the flywheel is up to you. I been stocking up on the fcub gear starters to do this conversion.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Re: 154-Converting starter-gen to std starter & ring gear
the loboy 184 comes from the factory setup for what you want on this 154......why dont you source the parts for 184 and look to the repair manual for the 184 for how it is all installed?

Re: 154-Converting starter-gen to std starter & ring gear
You can source any of the C 60 engines for parts.
I am finding parts for the regular cub loboy that will work [not the numbered]
Ya its a 6 volt starter but as long as you dont grind on a long time you wont hurt it

The frames are different (wider) on the 184 than those used on the 154. As was mentioned earlier, one will have to cut out a portion the frame to get the starter to fit and bolt up to the engine. Not an ideal situation in my opinion, as the frame will have a high likelihood to bend in this area unless its reinforced in some way.

Re: 154-Converting starter-gen to std starter & ring gear
welding a gusset along the edge of the cut away would solve that problem, as far as the frame being wider......has any one seen or know of a spec sheet on the frames that is available?

Hi Pete, I still have not done anything except have a 6v starter converted to a bolt for the battery cable attachment. One day.............. Thanks for the pictures.

Re: 154-Converting starter-gen to std starter & ring gear
I haven't chimed in because my answer does not directly correspond to the initial question.
The starter generator is a fairly simple rebuild. Parts should be available from your nearest auto parts store. There are also shops that repair starters and generators. Both options are much cheaper than purchasing a rebuild one.
Edit. Way back, a board member, Deputy Jailer, serviced Delco generators and starters. I purchased starter field windings from him.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: 154-Converting starter-gen to std starter & ring gear
Thanks, Eugene. I don't think I actually said why I would like to do this mod. One reason I would like to do this is to see if it can be successfully done. Another is to be able to have a single wire 12v alternator charging system with the added benefit of a more reliable starting system. Stan
