Serial number/year ID

Postby tuned » Tue Apr 22, 2014 11:03 pm

I was trying to look up the year of my new/old 154. The SN tag is partially missing on the left side. The numbers that I could read are 2000112U, but they don't quite correspond to the SN tables that I was looking at. My best guess is that it fits in the 1970 slot.
Any input on this guys? Thx
Todd

Look for the serial number cast into your block, usually under the tappet cover or above the oil pan, and you can also check other casting dates. One of our sponsors, at the bottom of the page, TM Tractors, has a ton of information on identifying a cub.

Unfortunately, that part of the number only identifies the model. The lost part after the letter "U" is the actual sequence number. You may be able to get a clue from the engine number, stamped into the engine block near the carburetor. Otherwise, the date codes as Randall suggested are the best you can do.

Hmmm. I'm gonna have to go take a picture (when the blizzard quits). The left side of the tag is what is missing. Therefore there isn't anything after the U in 2000112U. If anything, it is missing digits BEFORE this number, thus my confusion looking it up.
Thanks for the replies, guys. As I am not too familiar with this model, maybe it isn't even necessary to know the year if they didn't make any substantial changes through the range?

For most things that is very likely.

well that mystery is solved. On further inspection, there IS a number after the U. It was stamped in so lightly that it was almost invisible.Even after cleaning, I still couldn't read it with a bright light. So me being a stubborn b#$tard, I took some onion skin paper and a pencil and tried making a 'rubbing'. Et voila! I have a 1974, not a 1970 like I first thought
