2018 Garden Plans

Postby Eugene » Thu Nov 23, 2017 10:18 pm

Planning on planting more pecan trees, hybrid hazelnuts, and tame gooseberries on the acreage. Pecans, hazelnuts, gooseberries are naïve to the area. My problem has been to get larger fruit/nut sized producing plants to grow.

Also dropped a large maple tree shading the garden plot at son's house. Vegetable garden goes back in at son's house.

Previously did well with tame gooseberries, only to kill they off because I'm the only one in the family that likes gooseberry pie. Daughter has been making jellies for several years and will/can use the gooseberries.

Ever since I/we have owned the acreage we have planted many different types of tree and fruit/nut bearing seedling only to have deer eat them. Have previously planted wild plums, native hazel nuts, and assorted other trees only to have deer eat the seedlings. Only thing the deer didn't eat was the gooseberries.

Will plan the vegetable garden(s) when the catalogs start arriving, in a day or two.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Most of my seeds are ordered. Had a special, "free shipping", so I took advantage of it.

Plowed our garden spot last week. It was a little tight being red land but it will freeze out this winter. I had intentions of using the Cub with the FH plow but I took the 4630 with the 3-16”s over and plowed some bottom land for a deer plot for next season and decided to use it since it was already set.
