Hankering for gardening
Got the truck packed for the ride North….Seeds ,new Earthway Planter and a bunch of starting trays….Should be home near Central Lake Ontario by Monday…Guess there no big hurry, Neighbor sent me pictures a few days ago of my place and there's still snow on the ground( late spring it read) …Usually don't plant till end of May but got some plants to raise..Getting real antsy for the Tractors and all that goes with it …Got fruit trees and berries etc to take care of….Sounds like Rice should be the main crop for some of you guys…LOL..Hope it dries out for you soon….Take care Dave :

Rice
Maybe I should have gone that route, I've never seen the water this high for this long around here... getting some seeds in the highest part of the garden tomorrow before the big rains come at least.

Does he know we are expecting 1"-3" of white rain tonight?
I resisted the itch to put the tiller on the tractor yesterday.

Garden soil is still to wet to till due to the frequent showers and rain.
Do have some cool season crops planted and starting to sprout.
Soil temperature is 70 degrees at 2" depth and 59 degrees at 6" depth which should be great for starting cool season crops. Tonight the temperature is forecast to drop to 25 degrees.
Wait and see if the frost damages the vegetables and the fruit trees starting to bud and leaf out.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Hey Sonny, Be careful with those Ankles…I don't know much about those little hoes, but I do know a lot about those little bamboo sharpened objects they used to put in the trails in another Oriental country…Guess they got a thing for Ankle's and Feet...
Been busy since I got back home…Everything is on schedule for this time of year up here…Just got to get the weather to cooperate…Usually the 15 th of May till the !st of June is planting time up here….Take care Dave….

Re: Hankering for gardening
I HAD TWO NIGHTS AT AROUND 20 DEGREES AND THE FIRST NIGHT DID A NUMBER ON SOME OF THE PLANTS THAT i HAD JUST MOVED TO THE GREENHOUSE!! --- the second night I put up a heat light over the plants.--- they have recovered fairly decent with some brown leaves,---3 tomato plants did not so I got lucky on the rest!----have some more under the plant light so should be in good shape for tomato plants.
still struggling to plant potatoes and the onions are starting to grow tops now, so they ha awakened on target!
been working ground and hauling more manure/compost and working it in as I go! --ground is still hard on top and I break the crust a little with the field cultivator before I hit it with the big tiller!---cant stay on the big tiller if I dont loosen the top couple inches to cushion the bumps a little!
would love to get the hulless oats planted, and the rest of the peas/etc!---will plant some chicken corn soon if the weather holds up!---neighbor says if I plant,---HE is gonna plant 300 acres the same day!LOL!
I will also plant some of the bigger cabbage plants and cover them! --probably start on the bigger tomato plants too! Thats about it for this post! thanks; sonny

Re: Hankering for gardening
I think this is a late record for me here in Western NY! The day after easter.. The garden finally dried out and I'm gonna plant as much as I can in a day. Rains come back tomorrow... on the list for today is direct seed spinach, kale, chard, arugula, mustard, beets, more carrots, peas, herbs, and flowers. Then Transplanting broccoli, cabbage, lettuce and onions. I also have 20 flats of tomatoes and peppers that have taken over my living room since the greenhouse has been so cold so late this year.
oops! the sun's up, better get a move on!
