Get a large Havahart type live trap and trap them. Use sardines in oil for bait. Do not release them alive. They will only come back.

.22 LR or 12 ga #1 buckshot. If you know any coonhunters, I'm sure they would take care of the problem

Some ways work,--- others dont!---always go for the 12 gauge myself,-- if you cant go that route, then traps are best second choice! ---they dont like bright lighting right over the corn field area either! thanks; sonny

When I was a kid we used to sleep out on the corn fields with the 12 ga. Now we trap everything in Hav-a-hart, then shoot them with .22 Hand Gun with buck shot long rifles so I don't break any wires on the trap if it goes through. :D

Trap and shoot, sounds much better than stalking the cornfield all night

Dropping the trap in a trash can full of water, is quieter, and doesn't damage the trap. Ed

For coons bothering the wife's bird feeders we trap and shoot. For the corn I have an electric fence with wires three and eight inches high. You don't say what size your patch is so this may not be an option. I have also used poison where a fence couldn't be used. I don't like doing that because it kills EVERYTHING that samples the bait. I have however taken out seven coons in one night. Trapping is better but traps are expensive and you only get one coon at a time. Vern

I should have mentioned to start trapping as soon as silk appears. That way you may have them under control by the time the ears fill out. They start sampling early. :D

Thanks for the replies, guys....Yeah it kinda took me off guard as I didn't have a problem in the past.....My neighbor has a small plot of corn and he put an electric fence around his....So I guess Mr and Mrs Coons decided to wander over to my place.... Next year I'll be more prepared....In the meantime I'll set out some trip flares and a few other things I learned in a past life.... Only joking...I'll do some trapping....Dave

Well, I bought some " Liquid fence" for Deer and Rabbits and hadn't used it so I spread that around the corn and set out a" Have a Heart and then blow them away trap" and I had no visitors....However it rained yesterday pretty hard and into the evening so I didn't renew the liquid fence...We'll see in a few...

Bait the live traps,---it takes a few days, (usually) before they start going in them!---some of them will never go in, so that is why it becomes necessary to use a combo attack plan! thanks; sonny

So far they haven't been back since I used the liquid fence....I just spread it around a stand of corn thats about a week from maturity...We shall see...I bought 5 lbs and it seems to go quite aways....Course my stands are only about 60 x40 or so....I have 2 of them...More next year....

I've been using these traps: http://www.mackspw.com/Item--i-DKT0510? ... MgodQRQABQ
For the past 2 years. They'll pretty much only catch coons. I've never had as much luck with live traps.
Last year I trapped and killed 28 coons in June/July.
This year around 15.
All in the same area. This tells you that if you get a coon or 2, you are not done. This is why people get totally wiped out over night. You aren't dealing with "a Coon", likely a dozen or more.
We harvested 100 dozen ears of sweet corn from our 1/4 acre patch this year with little coon damage.
I hate them!
