Anybody heard of using "Tums" with calcium to control blossom end rot on tomatoes....I got 30 plants in a new never tilled before trial area, with no soil amendments...(Glamour)...I just noticed a red tomato....Turns out it had blossom end rot....Comments????Thanks Dave

Seems like an expensive way to add calcium. Besides, the tomatoes would never be able to chew them up.

I use a 1/4 cup of bone meal in the hole when planting and it pretty well takes care of the problem. Maybe an occasional fruit but not enough to be a problem. Also in the hole goes a teaspoon of epson salt and a tablespoon of 0-46-0. I never add N on tomatoes. (Yes, bone meal contains a minor amount.) For me there is no overall garden fertilizer but if I did want to do it it would be 6-24-24. I do sidedress corn and some other stuff with N. Vern

Thanks Vern....Some guy on the internet under BER, said he crushes two Generic brand Tums with Calcium and Epson salts when planting....So as said, I thought I'd check and see with the forum if anyone had ever heard of it....Also they make a tea out of the same thing...At least now all who read, have heard of it....LOL...Thanks again.....

I guess the new thinking is that blossom end rot isn't caused by calcium deficiency in the soil, but rather by too much water or rotten roots causing a problem with absorption. You'd be hard pressed to find soil that's truly lacking in calcium. hydroponics are a different story however...
