Ground cloth and lettuce beds

I have a fairly good size lettuce bed that is only used in spring and fall, due to the type lettuce we like not growing well in hot weather. I was wondering if anyone has tried putting the landscaping cloth (ground cloth) over one between times to hold down the weeds. I keep it tilled between uses, but still have a weed and grass problem.

I would use clear plastic. Bury the edges, and the heat of the sun will kill weed seeds and disease' leaving sterile soil.

I knew a guy that used clear plastic in his garden to keep the weeds down, but it was like a greenhouse for the weeds, they grew more because the light getting through and the moisture. I would say use black plastic or landscape fabric.
