What about planting tomatoes in rows and not tying them up and using a cub to cultivate them? Anybody grow theirs that way?

I plant my tomatoes in rows, and cultivate with the cub until they get too tall. I then put homemade cages aroound them. I have run out of cages and I let them lay over, spread out, what ever they want to do. They will make.

I plant in rows, and cultivate as long as I can, then let them sprawl. If the late blight behaves, I get plenty. Some years, the blight wipes me out. Ed

Select a bush type of tomato not a vine type, that'll work if that's what you want to do. Don't know how many you want to plant but I usually get 30 pounds per plant growing in cages mulching with seaweed to keep the weeds down. Good luck!

I till around mine until the plants fill the middles!---I plant 4' x 4' each way so it takes them awhile to close in the middles thanks; sonny

Put some straw under them to keep them off the ground. You will get better results however if you tie them up

Years ago Burgess seed co was here in Galesburg and dad grew tomatos for seed for them. That was before most people were growing hybrids. They were planted in 72 inch rows. Indeterminate (vining) ones would touch by the end of the season. For seed they were picked overripe but there was often discoloration of the skin where they touched the ground. The fruit inside was ok. Vern

When I was still in school, my friend and I had a scheme to make money one summer with a big tomato patch. We planted them in a check row method both ways, so that I could cultivate them both ways, like sonny said. I used a two row cultivators and it worked well that way, but we had a lot of room.
