a month early

normally in this area I would not be doing anything with garden for another 4 or 5 weeks, but it has been such a mild winter, and an extended period of way above average temps so I decided to go ahead and plant some garden. I figure at worst I waste some seed and a little gas, and since I am retired my time is not worth much of anything. This morning I pulled the disk plow off and put the Howard tiller on the cub, then this afternoon I went to work. I tilled about half the garden then planted, some sweet corn, bush beans, and a few hills of watermelon, cantaloupe and yellow squash. Then after I rested for a while I tilled a neighbors garden also. Only time will tell if it was a good decision or a bad one.

We're a little ahead also. Been in the 70's, yesterday was 80 and we're forecast to be in the 70's for a week. Ground has been too wet to till and it rained again last night so it will be a few more days. Nothing planted out but some things inside like tomato, pepper, cabbage types. Preparred the greenhouse yesterday two weeks earlier than normal and will start using next week. Frost free date is May 11. Always plant a little corn early. There's always hope. You probably could plant tatters. Let us know when the melons are ripe and give us gps setting. Vern

John, I plan to disk this evening and then plant tators and onions. Since it's been in the upper 70's & low 80's here in western MO, I'll wait 'til end of March before planting corn, beans and cukes. By then, it the weather patten should reveal itself as being constant or an early summer showing. If I can plant then, I'll be WAY ahead of normal.

I thought about waiting, but my garden has a lot of clay and is on the lower part of a hill so it is slow to dry out after a rain, so I decided to go ahead. Should be plenty of time to replant if I need to.

Asparagus starting to shoot up. 2 or 3 days before we have a nice bunch for a meal.

Tilled about 1/2 of the garden this morning. Ground is still a bit to wet. Tilled fine but mudded up the tires.

Next day or two I will get out the 2 wheeled garden tractor and plow the other half of the garden. This half is usually wetter and has oats, green manure, to plow under.

Was that a stock photo or this year's harvest?

I've been wondering if the morels would be early as well. Southern part of MO always ahead of us, but we might be ahead of "normal" this year. That's OK, I'll take it.
