We have very little woodchuck problems since the coyote population has increased. Have not shot or trapped one in two years. When they were abundant I used cut up apples in live traps. Used smoke bombs, but I like to see them dead. In the last two weeks I got one possum and two skunks in my live trap, I will not catch the same ones again.

Another thing I forgot to mention is the electronic pest repellers.--some of them work good while others not so good!
For voles/moles/ground squirrels etc the Sun-Force solar power worked for us last year in the gardens! ---they have a 60 foot radius each unit and emit a very weird bee---roop every 20 seconds or so and drives rodents nuts,--they also vibrate--sorta like your cell phone.

Next unit that will work on any pest is the YARD GARD electronic pest chaser.---we have one of them and the seam to help! ---each of them has an 80 foot radius of un-obstructed line of sight pattern. you can set them for eye or always on and what range/varmint size etc.---they are either battery power or 110-v (with the included transformer)

There are other repellers as well but I cant vouch for there effective ness!
I still like my 12-ga. magnum!---BUT when you are in a no-shoot zone, you have to bow to other methods (traps and such.)
The hogs do not like water either, so they can be chased from the den with a lot of water dumped down the hatch fast and have a good helper stand ready with good club/bat or other club and its 50-50 chance of smacking the sucker as it exits with a face full of water!---might even add something to the water that would burn their eyes, making it harder for them to see what they are running into!---Just tossing out a few more ideas that could help in your battle and in your no-shoot zone! thanks; sonny

Sonny, So it was the water! Years ago my parents returned from a camping trip and two days later dad realized he hadn't dumpped the holding tank when leaving the campground. He placed the trailer next to a woodchuck hole and .........well the woodchuck left. Two problems solved. Vern

Nothing leaves my "live" traps alive except gray and red squirrels. They are released many miles from the trap site.

Jim my nephew has the same problem, houses too close by to shoot. Like Don said there are some great air rifles out there that are accurate and pretty quiet. My nephew bought one for under $ 250.00 he also sets 3 havaheart traps. His problem is almost gone, well until next year at least.

I've caught numerous raccoons and a few possums in the live trap. But, I have yet to be able to lure a groundhog (or a rabbit, for that matter) into it.

What do you successful whistle pig trappers use for bait?

I have had my best luck with broccoli, I don't know why but they seem to love it.

We have good luck with cut up apple pieces, some are outside the trap to lure them in. Once my wife watched a wood chuck come out of the corn field eating pieces and going right into the trap.

My preference for bait is also cut up apples. I leave a piece or two just inside the trap and the rest beyond the trip plate. The back of the trap has a door but that is left closed. Good luck hunting. Vern

I use cat food to get the racoons. I put 1/2 small can in the trap (wired to the trap in back) and sprinkle dry cat food outside the trap and some just inside. Works great for me. Tuna also works. Grump

I use sardines for coons.

I caught 1 young woodchuck, once, using apples, for bait. Never caught another. Tried donuts, once, too, but couldn't get my head out of the trap! Ed
