Well, spring is here in deep south LA. Went to my local feed and seed Friday and came back with 10 Barred Rock chicks. I have had superior results with these in the past. They are very hardy and lay lots of beautiful brown eggs.

Looks like Spring is here to me....
Mom always had baby chicks each spring back on the farm.

So did I 10 white Leghorn my wife Regina likes the white eggs.

Your chicks look great! I'm currently remodeling the coop, getting ready for our chicks later this Spring. We've had Barred Rock before too, and I agree, they're hard to beat. Great temperment besides being hardy and good layers. We've also had Silver Lace Wyandotte, Golden Lace Wyandotte, Araucana (fluffy-faced chicken that lays blue/green eggs), Rhode Island Reds, and Dominique (similar to the Barred Rocks).

We usually order our chicks at the feed store, then they arrive about a month later. We sure enjoy them. Leaning towards a whole flock of Barred Rocks, like yours.

I am trying to get the coop ready as well. It seems like I am trying to build Fort Knox. The run is about 14' x 7'. I am putting in steel posts with fence pickets for the walls. The top will be chain link fencing with 1"x1" welded wire a few inches below it. I will then have a solid roofed area for them as well. I am then going to bury wire and concrete around the perimeter to deter something from digging in. It is hard because we have so many darn raccoons here and I have to take the necessary precautions to keep them out. Chicken wire is pretty much useless as the coons eat right through it. They also love my corn crop. Last year was so stressful that I have decided not to plant corn this year. I wrapped over 250 individal ears to the stalks with heavy duty strapping tape to stop them from taking them. It did work, and I saved all the ears, but that was just too much work. I will plant next year though with the use of an electric fence.

I think my wheat crop is going to stay in.3 years of corn put a hurting on the soil.Wheat is at $7.94 a bushel.Maybe late crop of green beans and peas.Nice chicks!!!! I think I'm going to want more.I always said,start small,see if ya like it. Kevin 12 just does not seem to be enough!!! haha!!!

I remeber ever spring driving with my dad to the feed store in ponchatoula louisiana to get about a dozen rhode island reds for the year, beautiful brown eggs.
