Barn Painting (year)

Ive been painting at my house and last year finished the goat barn, corn crib, two sheds and chicken coop and am currently about halfway done with the big red barn. We live in a old limestone farmhouse built in the 1840's and the barn was built in 1910. Its actually in the concrete also of the barns. Anyways, my question is right now the year of the barn (1910) is painted on front of barn. I want to put our families last name (wilken) up there once Im finished but not sure if I should include the year it was built. Im not sure if this would imply that the farm has been in our family that long and I dont want to be misleading or disrespectful to anyone. I would like to hear others opinions on this. I was just thinking of painting over the year and just going with the family name to be safe....whats your take?

Imho: do what ever you think looks best. It's your property and if anyone has a problem with that they can change it when they get the chance to own it.
That said, I do understand the historical view of needing to portray accuracy. I think I'd ask someone at your local historical society their opinion. I've found over the years those type of folks often come alive when someone asks their opinion and just might put you in contact with other folks who will step up to historical restoration projects with offers of funding or other support.

Good luck and enjoy your part in the history of the property.

We're all only temporary caretakers, you know.

Hi Jake,

I just came through your area about an hour ago. I was thinking of your neighbors, the Dahs family as I went by Strecker Rd on Rt 4. I'll bet Donna, the historian would have an answer. If not, there's a lot of wisdom not far from you at the Lyme Villiage Historical Society.

No opinion on the family name on the barn.

Has your family owned the farm since 1840? Or at or close to 100 years? Central states usually have a century farm program to note families that have owned and lived on the same farm for 100 years or more.

No my family doesnt even live in the "country". I grew up in the "city" I have lived there only about four years. I will probally ask one of the Dahs' as there son stops by once in a while. I also go around the corner and see Eugene every once in awhile... One thing is for sure though, I never want to hand paint any barns again. At least not one this size. I will try to post pics when all is said and done. The way my work schedule has been this could be a while though... jake

Jake you might want to keep in mind if you get the historical society involved sometimes they can tell you what you can and can't do with very old buildings. Just a thought.
