Just stumbled on this garden post. Still got a little broccoli left in mine. Got to pick it Saturday before it gets COLD this weekend and freezes the heads. Will still have kale after that. I don't go long without having at least something growing. Not quite a year-round garden but almost. Next year's first crops-peas-will start late in February if it's dry enough to plant them. I made a few raised beds to conquer that problem and kind of got hooked on the raised bed thing for most stuff.

Thanks for the hints on the squash borers. Had a lot of trouble with that for several years now.

The popcorn is now fully "explosive" and very tasty!!--nice big tender kernels!
We have been hitting the freezers pretty heavy this cold weather and our goodies taste just as good as they did from the garden!--excellent color and tender. We have cabbage, peas, green beans, corn (cut off cob), shelled beans, lima beans, black eye peas, spinach, green onions, tomatoes strawberries, peaches, pears, apples(from last year), etc.---also have squash ,onion, eggplant, cabbage, tomatoes, as cubes for flavoring in soups!
We have lots of tomato juice, red beets, peach and apple sauce, some tomato paste that we use as ketchup!
Really tastes good when you look outside and only see frozen ground and frigid wind!! thanks; sonny

Just had a big string of clean empty, plastic 1-gallon water jugs given to me!--I will cut the bottom couple inches off to use them over the plants in the garden like hot caps and they have worked good in the past.---just another use for them before they go to the landfill!--plus they last for several years of use!--they are fairly tuff! thanks; sonny

Finally got dry enough to let me get in the garden. We set out 12 bunches of 1015 onions. I can tell it too. My back and legs are sore. Right as we got through, it come a light shower and watered the onions in. Today we got 1.1 inches rain. Good thing we got the onions set out when we did. Too wet again.

Garden

Postby Joe Malinowski » Wed Feb 13, 2008 6:00 am

Can't wait for garden time just got back from Florida fresh strawberry time. Winter mess here today, last year I also put in 20 high bush blueberry plants in a old pasture they are doing great. This year I plan to add a rasberry patch down near the blueberries and maybe a couple rows of aspargus. When I was a kid my parents raised 10 acres and of course I would not touch it. Come on spring!

That sounds great!! --some of our southern members will be starting soon and I know all of the rest of us can't wait to get started on our gardens, too!! probably be last of april here, depending on weather, before we get started!--maybe sooner for the tiller work and some small areas to plow with the cub! Will start a few seeds in the kitchen window for real early bunch of plants , then more later in the greenhouse for a later planting! thanks; sonny

Ordered the seed

Postby Uncle Mike » Sun Feb 17, 2008 10:16 am

Finally got my garden seed order in. $110 !!! Used Fedco Seeds out of Maine. This is thier 30th aniversary, cover says 30 years of sping fiction. Gotta love folks with a sense of humor.
I have used them every year. Sometimes I end up with a parsnip from a pack of carot seeds, but the are greatly discounted from the normal seed prices you see. They buy a lot of seed from small operations.

When you get the hybrid poplars in the ground, stand back! I have a couple dozen that are about 16 years old. They're enormous. I'll have to measure... I think they're at least 60' tall. I suppose the trunks may be 24". Maybe I'll have them sawed?

Just looked at the "saved seed" long white eggplant test, and we got plants coming up!--That seed was from 2 years ago. --I forgot last year that we had saved it , or some of it would have been used then! --Looks like our own seed will all be ok. --the eggplant was the last test, everything else sprouted ok. I think I will try to keep the eggplants going, since its within the 8 weeks before last frost window.--getting close to time for tomato starting!--the cabbage comes up fast, so we need to wait a little while before starting them!

How are your seed/plant inventories coming along? thanks; sonny
