I have 100 hybrid poplars growing in my house right now!! I got them as cuttings and they are doing great!!

I am looking to get out there around first thaw and take down a few trees and get ready for the plowing !!

Regards,
Lyle

When you get the hybrid poplars in the ground, stand back! I have a couple dozen that are about 16 years old. They're enormous. I'll have to measure... I think they're at least 60' tall. I suppose the trunks may be 24". Maybe I'll have them sawed?

They say they can be harvested for wood in about 5 years!! and the stumps regenerate!!

The saved seed testing is going pretty good and right now I think the eggplant seedlings can be planted into bigger pots and will make nice early crop!
Have started several seed flats of tomatoes, cabbage and 3 different kinds of eggplants! (did I mention that we LOVE eggplant??)
We will be starting more seeds as time goes along, so we have a good supply of plants at different stages of growth!---This extends your crop supply over a longer period, and we have been doing this for many years!
If one planting gets damaged, you still have the next one to fall back on!
thanks; sonny

Dug up the 2 seedless grape vines and took them to the new garden. The ground was still frozen a lot in places, but we got them a new home!!--now if I can get some more of the fruit trees moved before they start budding out we will be in better shape.

Still starting more seed flats, and also got the eggplants transplanted into single cells, for now, may have to go with bigger pots later if good weather is behind this year, again like last year was.

All our saved seed germination testing came up as excellent, so that was good! thanks; sonny

I got part of my garden planted before the rain started. Again. Planted speckled butter beans, green butter beans, improved pinto beans, and some Merritt sweet corn. If it doesn't rain any more right now, might be able to plant Thursday. Will finish up with purple hull peas, cream peas, John Brown peas, and some Kandy Korn. Will set out tomatos, peppers, egg plant later, as well as okra and squash at the very last. Wet around here right now but later on in the year, we will be wanting just a shower every now and then.

Mr. E

From what I understand, the John Brown pea is an old variety pea. It is not available in feed and seed stores. The seed have been saved from one year to the next for so long no one remembers where it started. They were given to me from a member of the Travis family of Sabine County, who saved the seed.

It is a small pea that looks like a black eye when dried. They cook up like a purple hull including the soup. You have to cook them a long time to get them tender, but do have a good taste. I did a google search on them and got one hit that just mentioned the name with no info.

This is about all I know about them except they eat good. If anyone knows anything about them, I could use some educating myself.

Finished planting the garden today. All I like is squash, okra, and setting out my tomatoes, peppers, and egg plant.

The southern members are getting a good go at the gardens!!---good deal!!--we in zone 5 still have some frozen ground yet and MUD where it's not froze!---In 06 at this time we had garden stuff up and growing by now, so this is going to be a cold/late year for us!--Still planting more seed flats, re-planting some too!----Guess it's a little too cold here in the house for seed's to germinate! thanks; sonny

mud

Postby DanR » Sat Mar 22, 2008 7:43 am

Yesterday I got some quality seat time out in the mud hole aka. garden. I knew it was too wet but I had to do it. Since I traded the turf tires for AG's the Cub is a mud monster. The tomatoes I started might have blooms on them before I get them in the ground. I start more seed indoors every weekend in hopes I will have a good supply for the Farmers Market which opens 5/3. Every day it does not rain I will be trying to dry the mud hole out. At least I'm getting seat time!
