Re: New ham operator
Congratulations!
I had my station on a small city lot in a MN city with very restrictive antenna politics, but just over five years ago I moved here to a west MI farm and have been so busy that I have not put up a station. But if I get around to activating a station I will look for your QSO. I was always more interested in building QRP rigs than operating. I have collected some old keys and bugs as I worked being proficient at CW QSOs.

Do you have any HF or Dstar capabilities. We may try to have a Farmallcub Net some day.

Re: New ham operator
Congrats Dave!!! At the other place my neighbor had a ham set-up---he is long passed away but his call letters were W9CEO Downs! He even had a mobile unit in his car. I used to listen to him talk all over the world on it.
I never had the time to go above CB but always wanted to,--course I always wanted to get a pilots license too! lol! Money was always the problem for me!

No HF yet. I am still investigating how I can get out of this hole(valley) I live in.Steve Butram wrote:I recently purchased a Icom 7100 (shack in a box) Sweet! and currently have a NVIS inverted V antenna up in the back Yard. And run a Icom 5100 in my city vehicle I got a Yaesu FTM-6000 (2m70cm) to start off with. Considering a Yaesu FT-991a for base.

Sonny, you would probably pass the Technician (entry level) test easily. You can do it remotely from home at https://aarg.club/SONNY wrote:I never had the time to go above CB but always wanted to,--course I always wanted to get a pilots license too!
I tested with them. Very convenient.

Re: New ham operator
the FT -600 is a nice dual band for mobile use
My son K9LAF runs a FT891 in his Go-box with a Wolf River coil for portable use.
You may want to look at an End fed Sloper V antenna to get you out of the valley

I really appreciate your input, Steve.
I follow a couple ham fb groups and the advice is contradictory most times.
Still getting assimilated into the local radio club.

Re: New ham operator
Years ago, I used to operate the local Motorola Service Station. At that time all the radios were supposed to be certified once a year by a tech. with a class 2 Business license. One of my customers was a farmer that raised chickens and turkeys commercially and was a ham operator who had won a contest by being the first person to work all countries in the world from a mobile. One day when I was finishing his yearly certification on the business equipment, He said "John, with your knowledge and equipment you should become a ham operator. " I said, "Mr. Franz, after working on these things all day long I do not want to talk on them at night". He said," In that case you should, raise chickens and turkeys".
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
you are part of the problem!!!
