Days gone by

Postby Greenthumbfarms » Sat Jun 25, 2022 10:37 am

Herbicides have really gone through the roof lately, so we decided to nix the second spray of all our corn acres and get the old cultivator out. Been putting the old 4020 to work...caught some action shots of dad cultivating for the first time in 40 years. I had to run to town for a doctor's appointment and he wanted some seat time. When I got back to the field he couldn't climb off the tractor fast enough. After years in a cab, and reflexes slowing with age he gave me his usual "I'm not as young as I think I am"
Only have about 90 acres to go, but we are rained out. Haven't had a good rain in 3 weeks so this is a well needed rain.

Half of the neighbors say I'm crazy. The other half think this will make a comeback either from a cost standpoint or a chemical resistance point. Either way they say I'm one of 3 guys in the county that is cultivating in 2022

Good to see the old cultivators back in the field. I miss seeing ground worked, pretty much no till around here.

Not that long ago, generic glyphosate sold at TSC for $50 for 2.5 gallons, on sale. Now it’s $115.

I'm not sure what is worse. Would be quite a good math problem.

Looks like he is running a 6 row 3pt cultivator.

Back in the day, Deere made a front mounted cultivator for those tractors!

I hire out spraying to a local CoOp. Even at today's fuel price we come out a few bucks ahead each acre with the cultivator. I'm going to start looking for a 12 row...there just isn't enough hours in the day to get it all done with the 6 row.

I actually looked for one...an 8 row wide frame would have been able to be converted to a 12 row narrow (modern standard) fairly easily. They have become either collectors items or long ago scrapped.
Front mount is much nicer for visability!

"Been putting the old 4020 to work."..... Boy is my age showing! OLD 4020? I can remember when they were introduced! My cultivating was done with a Farmall H or M and a wide, 38 inch, 2 row. The H was much nicer. The first cultivation was the worst. Vern

Our “H” was reserved for most of the other tasks on the farm, I had to cultivate with the F-12, hence my lack of enthusiasm for the old “F” series tractors, today. That first pass was a real drag.

We went today and picked up a really nice CIH 183 12 row to put on my 4430. Might get done a little faster next year. I'll keep the 6 row for tight quarters.
