2022 garden season

We have been using Agway's "Provider" green bean for 27 years now, and before that, my FIL used them for who knows how long. "Provider" is available from many other places as well as Agway.
Only time we've had problems is when we get too much rain after planting them, otherwise they never fail to produce...and multiple times during the season.

In years past, I would alternate between Early Contender and Topcrop. Really good taste and quick maturity.

First sweet corn of the season for dinner this evening. Unfortunately, not mine. Mine won’t be ready for another 2 or 3 weeks. This came from 50 miles East in the North Branch of the Potomac River valley. Picked this morning. I know, Ed. It was still good, though.

Starting to get dry. Haven't had a decent rain in weeks.

Metal detecting this afternoon. Local clay soil has deep wide cracks. Hard as rocks. Moisture check at acreage, 2" down, powder dry. Soil, to hard to dig deeper.

All set up to start watering the pecans and apple trees planted last year. Drawing water from spring fed stream, then using the water pump to water the trees. 3 trips to the stream should put about 15 gallons water in the root zone of 7 existing trees. Hoping to get by with one watering a week.

You can have your stale, "picked this morning", corn, mine will be ready this weekend. Some at a farmer's market was $15 per dozen, kind of pricey for stale corn!

I once read of a guy who took his propane burner and pot of water into his sweet corn patch, got the water boiling, husked his ear of corn and cooked it while still attached to the stalk!

He wanted fresh!

A friend did that in my corn patch, a few years ago!

Sweetcorn, greenbeans, turnips, etc. all done for this year. working on the onions right now. Had wind storm a couple days ago that messed up a lot of stuff, broke off fruit trees and knocked most all of the fruit off.

onions are good this year but everything needs rain here in a bad way. Not sure what the taters are going to make, test dug a couple places to get some for supper and they are not bad so far.
Cant find the sweet potatoes,---ground too hard/dry to dig deep enough with my fingers to see whats under the plants.
fourth planting of sweetcorn is knee high and might make something,---time will tell. gotta mow off the first planting now. the second and third plantings did NOT come up----not a single kernel sprouted,---same seed --same tractor and planter, (neighbor's 656 diesel and jd 7000 planter), and he had the same trouble on his side of the river too!

Wild year and getting wilder! LOL!!

We got some much needed rain, about 30 minutes worth, but still need a lot more to make up what we normally get.
Water table is way down. Footing drain normally has some water trickling out but it’s been bone dry for most of the summer.
Last July we had 26” of rain!

No rain here. Forecasr was or your storm to come here, but it went north of us.

How can I tell when my sweet corn is ready to pick? It currently has thin ears with silk that is just starting to turn brown.

Peel the husk back slightly on several ears and see if the end kernels are filled out.

I’ve found that once the silk turns brown it’s done about all the growing it’s going to do. That was surely the case with my corn this year. With the hot dry weather we’ve had in NC this year the gardens have been a bust. I picked about 50 feed sacks full of really pretty corn last year and only picked 2 sacks this year and even what I picked was pitiful. Tomatoes are so bad I didn’t even open up my stand to sell any. I’m getting enough to give some to friends and can so I’ll have enough to last until next year and hopefully things will be better. The only thing that did well this year was potatoes. We are finally starting to get some rain so I’m hoping to plant a fall garden starting next month and maybe it will be better than the summer garden
