Gardens For 2018 Season

Did finally get the spuds planted,--all 120 pounds of them,---also planted nother row of peas.--these rows are bout 190 feet long. have 6 full rows of spuds and a partial row, so a nice patch.
The onion plants look good yet and should be ok.
The other seeds not up yet, too cold and today the temps. are dropping again. Yesterday it was 70* and very muggy.--today cold and light rain--forecast showing more cold/storms for the next several days. thanks; sonny

Wife picked a few spears of asparagus this morning. Ordered seedlings came in.

Planted two types of English walnuts and pecans. Also planted a dwarf plum, self pollinating beside the house.

Dwarf apple trees and crab apple next to house are blooming. Also the wild plum tree in neighbors yard.

Friday 65, Saturday 75, today 35.
Heavy sleet and freezing rain this evening putting a coating on the just starting to bloom daffodils.
No chance of getting anything going in the garden. Thought about raking the straw off the strawberries on Saturday but decided with the forecast to leave covered. Asparagus has not poked through yet.

asparagus on the shore has poked through about a half inch for about a week and a half now....but staying right there waiting for some consistent warmer weather.

What is the preference for onions....bulbs or plants?

Today,--we got up to 25*/high winds and more snow. Looks like another ruff week ahead.
Yesterday I dug a couple horseradish plants and after processing it made 2 and 1/2 pints total. I then split the crowns into quarters and re-planted them down the row at the end of the old plants. Did notice that some of the radishes are up, so maybe the rest of the seeds will come up.
I have the best luck with useing onion plants instead of sets. If you want nice big, ( 1 to 3 pounders). If you only want green onions then sets work fine, alsook for smaller onions.--- In this area the planting date was the middle of last month.--Ours look good so far despite the ruff weather we hav had.--so far they have had 6" or more of snow on them and a couple nights of 8* temps. and still standing.---Early planting is the secret to big onions and use plants. thanks; sonny

I grow several family heirloom types. My family has a Cantaloupe that I almost lost when I moved from farm to the big city for a few years. My uncle developed it back in the 70's. I also grow several beans that are nearly extinct. I like trying to save rare varieties, but I'm not physically able to do much anymore.

Asparagus is doing well. Problem is that neighbor hood kids have stomped down the asparagus patch, bending over the asparagus. The kids are preschool age. We will have to tell them to tell them to keep off the asparagus and strawberry patches.

The first planting of peas are just coming thru the ground.--the second planting is sprouted, so maybe some of them will come up after all!--looks like a few radishes up also.
Have the cold frame ready to start plants in and hope the glass over the top will keep things warm enough to grow the seedlings. thanks; sonny

It's April 26 and my sweet corn is still in the bag.......either I can't make the time to get out there or the weather is &!@*. We had 2+" of rain on Tuesday so it'll be a few more days before I can get back out there. With the spring we've had, I'm not so sure it's a bad thing the seed's still in the bag.

Finally got out on the field last night [with a shovel]
still have some snow cover to melt off yet
was able to dig a few trenches to drain the water off
the front 2 acres along the road looks like its going to be wet lands so planting around it is in order
found a small gravel pit by the upper pond were they were diging in to the hill [nice mix of sand ,clay and gravel]
the ochard needs some cleaning up and pruning next winter.
seed starts are doing great.
