Quiet line questions! help!

Postby sdurnal » Tue Dec 22, 2015 6:10 pm

First question.. Which quiet line series had a K321? Second question: What is the difference in the engine mounting for a K321 Vs K301? They are not the same block as I was told. I thought I could bolt up direct, and that is not the case. I can't just swap oil pans, If that's where someone is going. Thanks..

The 1450 used the K321AQS. The 1250 used the K301 AQS which may be slightly different from the K301 used in the 122,128 and 129, , Many specs for the K301AQS and the K321AQS are the same and I have worked on the both, but can't tell you without reservations that the blocks/ oil pans are different, but before you stated they are different, I would have said they are the same. Maybe some one will say for sure..

I may need to take photos to illustrate, but that may take a while. The tractor is a 680 and originally had (still has for now) a K301 AQS. The K321S is from a Wheel Horse. Same crank size PTO end, and I think the flywheel will accept the same drive shaft coupler for the hydro. The original tinwork on the 301 has long since cracked and been removed, so the quiet feature doesn't matter. If the pan does fit, there will be some external holes that aren't used, that the 301 doesn't have.. Thanks,

I do not believe you can take the engine from a Wheel Horse and put it in the Cub. I believe the blocks are drilled differently for mounting to the frame. At least, that's what I've always been told. I've not seen it first hand but I have worked on a ton of both Wheel Horse and CC tractors. The Wheel Horse Kohler blocks have ears that stick out where the oil pan mounts, which let the block mount to the wheel horse frame which is oddly narrow, and the engine mounts sideways, with the PTO shaft sticking out the right side. The ears sticking out will not fit between the CC frame rails because the engine mounts front/back instead of side/side. See this website:

Well, that guy has apparently gone out of business. I communicated with him in January about this conversion, but have been trying to reach him for 3 weeks with no response on cell, shop, or e-mail. I hope nothing bad has happened, but I need someone else who can perform this modification. Any suggestions? Thanks,

I doubt that Brian's out of business. It's much more likely that he is in Florida for the winter.

I also think it's unlikely to find anyone else who may modify that block for you. There are so many Kohler engines around that most folks don't get into altering the blocks too much other than the tractor pulling guys. Even then, there's enough engines and tractors around that the ones I know have a whole pile of scrap tractors and engines sitting around, and keep a few engines built ready to drop in if they blow one in a pulling tractor.

I looked closer at the modification and it's not too involved. I would think it would be pretty easy to follow the instructions to cut the ears off, even if you used an angle grinder. The only tricky part would be welding the plugs back in but again, since there's no pressure in that part of the block, the plugs are not structural and you could get away with some pretty crappy welds and Permatex on the oil pan gasket.

I'm not sure if you checked this, but I also thought that the crank shafts were different on Wheel Horse and Cub Cadet engines, making them not interchangeable. I do know that the Cub Cadet cranks and especially the PTO setup are different than any other tractor. I also know that the crank on a Wheel Horse Kohler engine has about a 2 or 3-inch long extension on the PTO side, because of the way the PTO works on the Wheel Horse tractors. The Cub Cadet crankshafts are short, only about an inch long, have a keyway, and are drilled/threaded for the bolt that holds the PTO assembly on. Most others are narrower diameter, longer, and just use a keyway. That's always been the bigger concern of mine.

I asked the same question of him regarding the drive lug, and he makes an adapter. (sent me the dimensions) I can go from there on that item. The PTO side is also longer, and may protrude through the clutch some, but I can overcome that inconvenience. I can get it shortened if necessary. (I don't think it will be necessary) There's no clearance issue there.. Thanks for checking it out. Two sets of eyes are always better than one.. Regards,
(I just wish he had left an "out of office message"!)
