Trying to remove a clutch assembly from a CC 106 that was sitting out in the boneyard. I've never removed one, but my grandfather has done a few in the past years. He said there are 3 set screws holding them on, with also 3 "jam" set screws as a safety to hold those in. I only found 2 set screws in 3 holes and no jam set screws. Previous owner must have left those out. Anyways.....I found an allen key to fit them and got one set screw out with a little work back and forth and a bunch of PB blaster. Now the other set screw will not budge and is stuck good down in there. Problem is my allen key is bottoming out by using the short side so I can have some leverage. I can use the long side and attach a vice grip to the allen key to turn it, but the allen key just eventually slips loose. I filled the hole where the set screw is with PB blaster and I'm letting it sit overnight this way. Any suggestions on how to get that thing out of there without breaking anything? It is the only one holding me up from getting the clutch assy. off. I've already removed the front cast weight/grill housing and hood for easier access. I figured you guys might know a trick!
Thanks!

Re: CC 106 PTO Clutch Removal Issues
You might try a quality set of allen wrenches. They also make allen wrenches with a ball type end.
Less expensive allen wrench set have a tendency to round over the wrench corners.
Take you old allen wrench set, insert allen wrench, tap on the allen wrench.

Re: CC 106 PTO Clutch Removal Issues
Since the PTO clutch is probably shot and PB or whatever isn't working it will probably take some heat to get the set screws out (like oxy/acetylene). Since you've started to drill it out then you're pretty much committed to that route, at least on that one. Like Eugene said a quality set of wrenches is your best friend when it comes to stuff like this.

Re: CC 106 PTO Clutch Removal Issues
Thanks for the help guys. I was using the set of Allen wrenches that came with my Craftsman set. Those set screws are so hard that the heavy duty steel cutting drill bits wouldn't hardly cut through them. The hits cut through some but it's very slow and caused me to break one bit. I bought some left hand drill bits. Think those would work as last resort before the heat?

Re: CC 106 PTO Clutch Removal Issues
I had one I couldn't remove and took it to a guy that fooled with them all the time, he drilled it out and made it look easy. Slow with a quality bit then chased the threads. It is still going strong.
Good luck,
Good luck,

Re: CC 106 PTO Clutch Removal Issues
Just take your time. Get a set of Allen's and cut the short side off. Stick the long part in and hit with hammer. Repeat several times with Blaster or better is acetone and tranny fluid mix. Takes a day or two. Work back and forth hammer etc. I got all six out of a ancient one this way
