cub 2072 electric PTO
Working on a 2072. Front engine seal was leaking. After disassembly, found that the electric PTO was caked up with dirt and oil. I disassembled the PTO clutch assembly to clean it up and there isn't a friction plate. Is there supposed to be? It doesn't make any sense for there not to be one because then it would be a metal on metal contact (which is what I am seeing on this one). Are the electric PTOs rebuildable and how hard are parts to find for them?

I've got one apart from an 1811 right now, and there's no friction plate in it either. It's just metal on metal.
As a word of warning, make sure to look at the installation and adjustment manual for the PTO clutches, to make sure you set the air gap correctly. If it's not set correctly, the clutch will burn up.
Also, running a tractor with a bad battery in it will burn the clutch up. The clutch, being an electromagnet, pulls a ton of juice, and if a battery is no good, the generator in the tractor will not supply enough power for both trying to charge a bad battery and power the PTO clutch. The guys at my hunting camp just burned up this PTO clutch over the summer. When I asked what they were doing, they were holding the PTO switch up to the start position, to keep the mower engaged a little longer. Yep, burned the clutch right up. The magnet looks like a piece of over-cooked toast!

Re: cub 2072 electric PTO
Exactly what happened to this one. I know that the battery isn't charging and that is going to be diagnosed when I get the engine running. Because the thing was run without charging and low battery, the PTO switch had to be held in the engage mode all the time. No doubt that this clutch is probably burnt up but I have to try it just because they are so expensive. I have my doubts. Read about the air gap some. Is that the gap between the clutch faces when not engaged? Anyway, new battery installed, get the engine back together and running and then check the charging system. I realy hope the problem is a bad regulator and not a stator.

Yes, the air gap is the space between the plates when not engaged. There are slots along the outside of the PTO where you can stick a feeler gauge through the slot, then adjust the bolts with the springs to close or open the gap.
You can check the PTO without anything hooked up, on the bench. Using an ohm meter, stick one end on the wire then another on the base plate for the PTO clutch. If this shows no resistance, the PTO is shot, magnet is welded to the housing and shorted out.
