CC Original Deal or not

Postby BackswampCub » Sat Apr 19, 2014 3:14 pm

I am going to look at a CCO tomorrow. From the pics it has the correct seat, sleeve hitch assembly and Spring assist. Motor appears all original including the aircleaner. It also has a 38" deck under it. The guy is asking $400 for it and is 3 miles from me. Only thing that I can see missing is the IH emblem on the grill. He is willing to take a rifle in trade for it. I have about 350.00 in the rifle. Am I going to be doing okay on this deal or wait for something else.
This is the first one I have found local in over 6 years looking.

I don't think that's a bad price for an original, especially if it's running. Look for cracks/breaks in the case that goes between the transmission and the frame, as they were prone to this happening. The deck should be a big rectangle, timed blades with a big cogged tooth belt, and with loops on the ends for skids, and hopefully the gauge wheels and arms in the back. That was the only deck built for the originals, but some folks swapped the later 38 deck for the original ones. The later one is shaped like a typical mower deck is now, pointed on the ends.

The missing IH emblem is not the end of the world, as those are pretty easy to find. The hoood ornament however, is nearly worth it's weight in gold, and was only used on the original so they are scarce. Also, the correct extruded metal grill is hard to find if it is missing

Other things that would make it exceptional would be headlights, fenders, or a creeper drive.

Send us some pics when you've got it!

That sounds fair pending overall condition, does it have fenders? I just picked up a 4-digit with fenders, lift, spring assist oil bath air cleaner, emblem and hood bird in good overall condition for your gun value :-)

Well I did not end up with the tractor. I got a trailer hooked and was half way there when he called back to say his brother in law offered him cash for it. I offered him cash and he said that he did not want to piss his wife off by not selling to her brother. I was a little pissed to say the least.
