Farmall Cub

hi, i'm new here and could use some help. theres a cadet model 72 in running codition( not running great ) down the road and the old fella would like me to make an offer any ideas ?

It is tough giving values without seeing it, much harder without much of a description. Values vary by location, but a ballpark figure in my area for a running, OK shape, all there, original 7 hp engine, $200+/-, extras add value (fenders, lights, rear lift, spring assist, weights, working mower deck, etc.) Get a few pictures and post them and I am sure we can come up with a better evaluation.

I agree with David. Depends how you're going to use it, for me we do quite a lot of mowing so minimum 10 hp,12 is better (although my grandfather mowed about the same area with the 70 for many, many years.) If you think he's a guy who changed the oil and used a grease gun from time to time, and if it's in good shape, it might be worth $300-350 to me just knowing it was cared for. Check the steering for tightness. And like David says, all those extras can add to what dollar amount you should offer. Same thing, if somebody was stingy with the grease gun, makes a big difference.

thank you both as it turns out i spoke with him tonight and he was only looking for $50, its all there ,he pulled out a notebook with hishandwritten service records going back to '69,steerings a touch loose,motor was rebuilt locally about 12 yrs ago. as far as i go, we've got a acre here and i mow 3/4 of it with the f-cub, we have a good craftsman rider ,but the way i look at ita good craftsman could'nt hold a candle to a tired cub cadet. and now my boy and i have a winter project. thanks again.....John

I'd say you got a deal! The 72 is a really nice little tractor and that 7-hp engine is WAY under rated for what it will really do! Lets see some pics!

Congratulations, yes a good deal! They are a lot of fun to work on and pretty simple, you should have a great time with your son!

That is bang on. I have a 1990 Craftsman 12.5 Deluxe ... blew the B&S a few years ago, blew the deck spindles more than once. However I do have to say this .. my craftsman did the work of a Cub/SA for over a decade before it quit. All it really needs is a new engine in it. It is still a far better lawn tractor than most MTD's built today. The deck is currently on my nephew's Craftsman which was my Father-in-laws. We bought them both at Sears in Calais Maine. Very good little lawn tractors but not in the league of the IH Cub Cadets.

And that is the most important thing - spending quality time with your boy doing things you both enjoy. They grow up to fast .. ask me ...
