Ok rebuilt carb new coil condenser good points. I am getting popping sound comeing from the muffler. It's not bad but audible. The carb is adjusted per the manual. I thought maybe it needed tweaking but not sure in which direction and which screw. It's a carter carb. On a k161 7 horse. Also the previous owner set what looks like new points on 18.

Dress/touch up the points. Then set to .020". See if that helps or solves the problem.

They look clean and new but who knows they may be burnt where I can't see.
I'll give it a shot. Thanks

Slick the k161 has a high speed ajustment screw that if ajusted to lead causes missing and (backfire) and if its ajusted to rich causes soot and poor power,
turn HSAS(high speed ajustment screw) counter clockwise from a (closed) position 2 turns- after engine reaches normal opt temp accelerate engine and check response
then place engine under load turn HSAS to leanest mix that will allow satisfactory acceleration and (steady governor opt) if engine misses and backfires under load the HSAS is to lean, turn HSAS counter clock 1/4 turns at a time until corrected the 301s are a little diffrent. TIP at top of home page in the lite blue section straight across from the letters (site rules) is (NEW) Manuals /cub cadet manuals/your model/ download pdf.

Yeah I've looked at the manual a 100 times in the last week lol
It's got a cater carb and I've adjusted it by the manual but I'm going to have to figure out what it likes cause the factory settings are not getting it done. I'll keep adjusting it till it quits. It's old and I'm sure with ware and tare you have to make adjustments. It has to be that I've changed the electrical coil, cond, cleaned adjusted points and so on. I'll post the results next week.
