On my thrower the shaft that has the small sproket that drives the auger, I notice has some side to side play, not alot maybe 1/4". I keep it greased and assume there should be some play here but how much ?

And how could you take the play out other than shim washers ??

I have mine off right now and cleaned. I have very little play; less than a finger nail. I will take a close-up photo and you can compare yours to the photo to see if something is different. Looking at it it looks like the thick cotter pin prevents movement. Hopefully I can figure out how to post a photo.

I see now there is a set screw on the youlk where it goes over the shaft so you an loosen the set screw and slide the youlk further on the shaft and remove the paly. My question is do you want to remove ALL the play??

Also how would you change the bearings if needed ??

chain drives are made to be parallel.... so little or no play is the goal. set a straight edge on the two sprockets to ensure they are aligned then tighten.
