Hey guys this is my first time posting here and hope you can help?

I recently purchased a Cub Cadet 104, 1969, 10HP Kohler and don't know the size of the cutting deck. I do know it is either a 38" or 42" but there are no tags or stickers on the deck any more. I was wondering if someone had the dimensions between the spindles to help me out or som other way of being able to determine what size it is.Thanks in advance.

Use a tape measure to measure the width of the strip it will cut.

I'm Sorry I should have been more detailed. I didn't recieve any blades with the deck and the guy I bought it from didn't know what size it was either. So I was hoping that if someone new the measurments between the spindles that it might help, because I need to buy blades.

Ok so I was at the parts place picking up a wear button for the CC104 when I hat a chance to see a exploded view of a 38" and 42" Deck. I now know I do have a 38" deck whick raises my next quistion. When I bought the blades for said deck and mow with them I have 2 small strips of grass left from were the outer blades and the center blade could not reach. Is this normal and could I try a slightly larger center blad as long as it doesnot interfer with the outers or hit the deck.

Sounds like they did not give you the right blades. I don't know if Cadet ever used a set-up with a larger center blade or not. But some mowers were set up that way.

I'm not sure what parts breakdown you saw to determine you had a 38" deck, but the 38" and 42" deck use the same parts breakdown (unless a different deck has been adapted to your tractor). Any differences in the parts for the two decks are noted for that part such as blades: 38" one part number, 42" another. I would believe you have a 42" deck and blades for a 38".

If the deck does not have cast iron ends, including the mount points for the outer spindels, then a 42" deck is just a bit over 48" [48-3/8] wide from side to side, and a 38" is about 44", not including any bolt on grass deflector or extention. I don't have the sizes of the earlier cast iron end deck's, but sizes would be similar even though they have a deflector/blade guard cast as part of the right end.
