Rear Brake Pad Replacement

Postby Jack fowler » Sat Jan 17, 2004 10:15 am

In a previous post I was taking about a brake issue I was having on one of my Cadets. When repairing that problem I noticed the brake pads looked a little worn so I decided to call an IH dealer and get the brakes. To my surprise they wanted $100.00 for both sides. Needless to say, I backed off that one real quick! I started surfing the internet and came up with this site: http://members.aol.com/pullingtractor/tips.htm.( under folder Miscellaneous Performance - Putting the Brakes on an IH Cub Cadet ) I called Brian Miller and he said he has not tried the S-10 pads himself yet but, he has reliable sources that have. I looked at a set of S-10 brake pads and their 3/8” thick and have to be resurfaced to .125’’ total thickness. Has anyone in this Forum tried this or anything else to replace Cadet disc brake pads?

After reading the new brake specs were .100” and after checking mine, which were at approximately .030-.085 I still have a little to go. When they wear out I still don’t want to pay $100.00 for brake pads! :!: :!:

Thank you, to Brian Miller for answering my questions and a very nice web site on Cub Cadet garden tractors.

Jack: I think Mcmasters carries the correct thickness brake pad material and the glue to glue them. I think I read some where that liquid nail will actually do the job. I think if you can find a course belt sander or disk sander you can get them to the correct thickness and keep them flat.

Hi Jack!
Just finished a brake job on my 108. Total cost $18.00 Cdn. I ordered a small piece of flat brake pad 3/8 in thick from a company that relines brakes,.( Parts for Trucks) . Cut the shape I needed, and cleaned up the old shoes good .I used a two part epoxy and glued them to the shoes.
It worked very well. You can order the brake pad what ever thickness you require.I do not think you can do them much cheaper than that. 8)

Bruce did you know that when you are on one of your posts you have an extra button on the top right. It says edit. In other words when you make a typo you can go back in on your post and fix it. Only you get this on your posts. I imagine Dennis can too and well the administrator should be able too. Though on this forum I have never seen any thing that even came close to bad. It speaks well for the cub guys and girls.

We all learn every day. In my case I learn the same things new more than once. Gives me the chance to say "Hey ain't that great" . Bev then asks what s great. I tell her and she says whats so great about that today? I ans what do you mean. She says that was great yesterday. why is it great today. Another senior moment.

Bruce,

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping someone would try it before I had to. I’ve been through so much this past year, I forgot about the brakes on my Cadet.

Now I have something else to do

Hello, I'm new here and have been going through old posts. I have a Model 1872 Cub Cadet that might need brakes. I found Disk Brake Assembly and Pucks on http://www.mfgsupply.com as part numbers 4-488 and 4-490. I was wondering if this is the brake setup on my tractor and if these pucks will fit? Their $1.99 a pair. Thanks. Brian

I don't believe that is the brake pad you want.

I have used 3/16" thick, molded, nonmetalic, strips of brake/clutch lining material from McMaster-Carr. It is sold by the foot, and comes in widths from 1" to 6" wide. I used 2-1/2 wide strips because it let me cut multiple sets out of a 1 foot length. That width is a $5.25 a foot. The 3/16" thickness is a little too thick and it needs to be thinned down, but that is the thinnest the material comes. I used polyurethane construction adhesive, because I had it, but Liquid Nails or an epoxy will also work. Doesn't take a super strong glue because of the low tractor speed and brake pressure involved. Just be sure to remove all the old lining and scuff up the steel pad before gluing on the new lining.
